Hi everyone,

I don't post much, but I am an avid reader of the group since mid October
2003 when I started this little adventure. Ive found the success stories on
this group have really helped me focus (some of you are AMAZING!) so when I
met a bit of a milestone today I decided to post and let you all know!

This morning I weighed in at 100kgs on the nose - my first major goal. Thats
15kgs down (33lbs) and I have (almost) moved into double figures again! Its
been a fairly slow process and a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I dont mean
losing and gaining and losing weight over the last 5 months, but rather
losing in fits and spurts. The biggest lesson I have learned is not to get
discouraged when the scale doesnt move for a while - I know I'll get there
eventually. I have a really long way to go (Im only 1/3 of the way to goal)
but today Im feeling pretty proud of myself! My weight loss has been slow,
but fairly steady, and I really havent struggled with it. My appetite is
under control for the first time in my life, and I do still allow myself an
occassional treat - important for my sanity ;-).

People are finally beginning to notice Im losing weight. This didnt happen
for a really long time. When I told someone today that I still have 30kgs to
go she exclaimed "you'll disappear if you lose that much!". This begs the
question - is it possible for some people to "hold" their weight better than
others? I never used to weigh myself (big part of the reason I gained
weight) and I didnt really notice the weight gain until I got way up near my
highest weight. People are always surprised to hear how much I weigh. I am
5'8" - pretty tall for a gal, but my BMI is obese. 5 years ago at University
I weighed 80kgs and people often commented that I looked much lighter than
80kgs. I was actually pretty fit and comfortable with myself at 80kgs.
Anyway, it doesnt really matter - Im aiming for 70kgs (around 154lbs) which
I think is a nice slim-but-curvy weight for me. But we'll see when I get
there!

Next goals: to step up my exercise and make a B-line for the 90kg mark. I'd
also like to get the courage up to start posting some progress pictures
online, Ive found everyone elses so motivational.
Next major milestone: 80kgs - a long way off - but in my sights now!

Thanks for listening!
Caitlin

Over the weekend my brother-in-law and niece were shocked to find out that I
weighed 165 and still had 40 more lbs to go. I'm hoping my niece is inspired by
me because she has always had a weight problem. She and my sister are starting
at a gym this week, though, and I KNOW my sister is doing so because she saw how

Yes, I think some don't show as much. But the other half of the problem is that
damn near EVERYONE lies about their weight. So the frame of reference is kind
of iffy.

No real data, but my feeling is that it is. When I told my best mate
what my starting weight was, she didn't believe it could be that high.
And my mother looks much more than what's showing on the scale, but
that could be because as she's very disabled and has never exercised,
she has almost no muscle tone.

Hi Caitlin,

This really hits so close to home.

Three weeks ago I went to lunch with a friend I see almost weekly and one I
hadn't seen in 6 months. (Both are very slim). My weekly friend knows about
my weight loss adventure but my 6 month friend did not know.

After we finished lunch my weekly friend mentioned my diet in passing and my
six month friend who hadn't seemed to notice any difference in my body
congratulated me and said I looked "wonderful". I thanked her and said I was
really excited because I was steadily getting closer to the halfway mark to
my goal. She freaked out and started going on about how I would get sick if
I lost any more weight, I was just right the way I was, yada yada yada.

I looked at her and casually asked "How much do you think I weigh?" (People
hate it when you ask them that LOL) She hesitated for a while and then came
up out of the blue with 138-140. Unaccustomed as I am to revealing things I
am ashamed of about myself, I told her I weighed 188 lbs, and that I weighed
212 two months ago. I then asked if she really thought I should stop now?
She started in about how I had such big bones or something and I carried my
weight so well, and I really looked fine, then the ladies quickly changed
the subject to bone density and then decided to start in on how my low-carb
woe may contribute to osteoporosis, that I should get a bone density scan,
asap.

I don't know if my 188 looked less fat that another persons 188 but I sure
hate it when they say, "You're fine right there". I am approaching my
halfway there milestone and I don't want to be encouraged by "well meaning
friends" to stop. It makes them seem like less than friends.

Next time I'm going to say something like "how would you like to have to
carry around a 50 lb load on your back 24/7 for the rest of your life??" I
never think of these good retorts till it's too late *sigh*

Congratulations on YOUR Milestone, Caitlin. I'm proud of you.
