Take it how you will, but most people are going to listen to you if you're
only partially successful. Perhaps you're basing your perspective on how
easy it is to convince little kids that you're right. Older folks are a
little more set in their ways. HTH

Change are to aren't.

Figured that out. And it doesn't match my experience at all. I started
low-carb because I saw it working for someone else before he'd reached
goal, my sister started exercising because she saw how much more
energetic and fit it made me even though I haven't yet reached goal, and
several of my fat friends have at least started cutting back on carbs
and sugar since I started losing weight. After about the first 30
pounds, even when I was still obese, I got tons of compliments and
"How'd you lose all that weight?" questions, even from people much
thinner than I who only need to lose some vanity pounds. People listen
to me because of my attitude, I think, because I'm not preachy, I'm not
condescending, and I listen to them too. And if you think it's easier
to convince kids that you're right, you don't have the same kinds of
kids where you live. The ones here think they already know everything.

So, the problem you have with Laureen is that she has had Gastic Bybpass
surgery? Does that matter, really? Yes, I am top posting.........

You obviously couldn't tell that I was questioning your pride in Laureen's
achievement of losing 100 pounds through surgery. Would you really take
more pride in going that route rather than just stuffing a little less ice
cream in your pie hole?

some days I concider it but then I would be so dissapointed if it did
not work.. Other days I just consider a do it yourself tummy tuck... I
have access to some tylenol and Ibuprofen.. that would numb the pain
right? Oh where you being a smart ass? I could not tell.

You could lose 100 pounds by cutting one of your legs off. Would that
make you proud?

When you're out in the world...and you see a seriously over-weight
person....is it all you can do to NOT run over to them and say, "Hey!
Have you heard about the Atkins diet?"

Until people are ready to change, their attitude can generally be summed up
in the words of Jackson Browne:

"Don't confront me with my failures --- I have not forgotten them"

I want to run over and yell at the people who claim to be addressing their
weight problem but spend most of their time plotting how to cheat or trying
to convince other people it is OK to cheat.

Not really; I know from experience that it wouldn't do any good, and
that it would likely be perceived as self-righteous and annoying.

Might even serve to deter the person...

When I was overweight, I had people occasionally 'preach' and
'witness' to me about low-carb and I didn't buy into it at the time
because it just seemed gimmicky or too good to be true.

What finally convinced me to try low-carb was that someone I knew and
respected a great deal made an amazing transformation -and- managed to
keep it off for quite some time.

The tone of that last sentence seems to suggest failure over time. Is that
so?

Nah, she's still successful; I was just writing in the tense of the
time. I started LC in late 2000, the person in question (a relative)
has been doing LC since early '97. Went from about 220# to 110#.
Took her about 2 years to get to that weight, and everything sub 150#
was a real struggle for her. She had a brief regain in early 2002 to
about 130ish, but managed to get it quickly back under control (mainly
by adding weight training-my influence ) and hasn't had a problem
since.

She is one of those that really does best keeping the carbs very low
to maintain (25-30g or less). Interestingly enough, it doesn't seem
to affect her lifting at all when she does so.

Good. She certainly is a success in my book! You too.

Interesting how people have these "magic number" weights that are struggles
to get to and stay below. Sort of like a "dare line."
