What do people put in grits?
Tried grits for the first time – tried it straight with no additives except a dash of salt substitute, to see how it tastes. Great stuff. Does anyone have favorite things to add? Fruit, honey, sweetener, etc? It seems at least as good a base for experimenting as oatmeal. Mal |

I've actually never heard of grits being used with sweet stuff in it.
I LOVE grits though, but I eat them with margarine and salt. Very yummy. Mal I'm not a real big fan of grits, but I've had them with butter, sugar or maple syrup before. Yes, I would prefer them sweet. But there is a restuarant in town that is supposed to have great grits that have bits of bacon and cheese in it. There are apparently tons of ways to serve grits. I would think that just about any thing you could think of adding to potatoes you could do the same with grits. -- LFM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm walking to save lives. Actually, I don't mix literally, they get mixed as they bubble and thicken. I love mine with Splenda or Equal and eat them with the Smuckers sugar free syrup at only 1/4 cup=20 cal. I make a huge bowl in the microwave. The large portion I make has 275 cal. Grits and farina probably aren't as good for you as oats for example, but they sure are good. Remember to stop the microwave and stir a couple of times or you'll get clumps. I have it down to a science though exactly when to stir and how long to let them cool. I like them pretty thick. Walmart sells quick grits and farina real cheap if you buy the GV brand. Their oats are also cheap....about half the price of Quaker. dkw |
