Default How long is your workout routine?

Hi all,

I'm a female, 37 yrs & I'd like to lose 50 lbs & get tone. I'm just starting
out & so far I have a routine of 35 minutes on weights & 30 minutes on my
eliptical. Do I need to add something else?

I'm just curious as to how long your workout routine is? Also how many
times do you do your workout in a week?

Thanks,
Giggles

I'm a 62 yr old female and just started back exercising after a broken knee.
I do 30 to 45 minutes a day on a treadmill (1 1/2 to 2 miles) 6 days a week.
I take Sunday off. This is in addition to the usual housework we all have
plus weeding a large garden and pushing a lawn mower a few hours a week.
I'd like to lose these last 30 lbs if possible.

Start - 7/5/06 - 170lbs
Today - 161 lbs
Goal - 130lbs
Height 5'6"

Hi Giggles, Welcome to the group.

I only started going to the gym in January. My son and I try to go 5 times
per week.

We usually do weights on day 1, 3 and 5
and cardio and weights on days 2 and 4
We usually workout for approx. 1 1/2 hours on weight days and only approx.
45 minutes on cardio days.

Being young and overweight sadly is not an uncommon problem at all these
days. Just drive down to the mall and look around!

What you need is a plan, with the help of your parents, that you can stay on
for the rest of your life that you are comfortable with and where you aren't
starving yourself either!

You need:

1. To eat three meals a day - just healthy, low-fat, low calorie meals!

2. Eat healthy snacks when you are hungry, like fruits.

3. Get daily exercise.

The Weight Watcher plan, which people in this newsgroup mostly use, is an
excellent, balanced plan that will really help you long-term.

Cutting out meals might work for a week or two, but you will probably like
to fit in three meals a day over the long term for satisfaction and health.
Not to mention that you are still growing!

Get your mother or father to take you to a WW meeting!

Dear god.

Eat!

Seriously, you're *really* killing your metabolism by not eating, and
it'll screw you up and cause weight problems for you for the rest of
your life. Really. Ask me how I know.

Several people here could explain it to you, but I'll spare you, myself.
the point is, you need to eat at least three meals a day, *especially*
breakfast. Just don't make them high-calorie meals!

According to the WW resources, you should be ingesting 26 points a day,
plus another 35 points a week, plus any more for any exercise you do.
Those numbers are designed for weight-loss, not weight maintenance;
you'd eat more if you wanted to maintain. Now, how many calories a
point is varies depending on fat and fiber content, but you can
approximate by assuming 50 calories/point. That means you should be
eating in the neighborhood of 1300 calories per day, plus the extra 35
points. If you're only drinking a 200 calorie Slim-Fast, your body is
going to shut down *fast*.

When I was 14, I weighed 180. When I was 17, I weighed 230. When I was
23, I weighed 300lbs. Don't feel embarrassed: far too many people are
in the same boat as you. But wrecking your body by not nourishing it
won't fix any of your problems; you'll lose weight right off, but after
a few weeks it'll stop totally. Then you'll put weight on *faster* when
you start eating again.

If you'd like to try the WW program, they'd be more than happy to
welcome you (altho you'd need a note from a doctor, because of your
age); the plan is very simple: you can eat anything you want to (yes,
anything; I had a candy bar yesterday, and Mexican food for dinner
tonight), just don't eat over your caloric target. That's all you need
to do. And you get to *eat* and lose weight. It's so much healthier
for you.

But, if you don't want to join, you can just hang around the NG here and
pick up some helpful hints and recipies for healthy, filling meals and
snacks. Weight loss is only around 1-2lbs/wk, but that's a healthy
rate, and at your age it *might* go just a tad faster. But look at it
this way: you could be down to your "ideal" weight (between 116 and 134)
before you graduate high school. How great would that be? And all you
have to do is eat.

Good luck. And I hope you stick around.

Is there any way you can get to WW meetings? You will learn what a healthy
diet is and also learn "portion control." Only 200c a day is starvation
rations and very unhealthy. Would your parents buy you the frozen diet type
dinners from the grocery store? They're about $2.50 each. They're mostly
low calorie and would take portion control out of your hands. A daily
multi-vitamin-mineral would also be helpful.
