Long term success of Atkins?

Understandably. But why did Dr Atkins himself conduct such a study? Granted, it would be better if it was conducted independently, but I would expect Atkins to actually do such a study. I am even surprised that it was not done. It answers the most pertinent and basic question, just how well does this diet works compared to others. There have been (I think) 2 studies conducted other 12 months, and least one 5 year study is underway, we won't have the results for another 4.5 years. One of the 12 month studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine this year and the conclusion was that Atkins was at least as good, for various definitions of good, as the low fat diet they compared it to.
