Second, drink plenty, and I mean plenty, of water before the food is
served. That will help curb your appetite. Maybe even drink some water
with some sugar-free Metamucil... that will add to the effect because
of the additional fiber.

snicker... metimucil. That stuff kills me. Funny, One dose is
only like 4g fiber - right? Yet it upsets and tears me up more than a
bowl of FiberOne at 14grams.

I think it's 5g fiber... but it doesn't bug me. Of course... I am
used to having some 25-40g fiber... and recently, primarily eating
veg/fruit/meat and little grains, I've been having that "c" problem.
Veggies aren't enough fiber for me, even in the quantities I eat.

I'm the same way - I like my fiber. :-) But there's something about
metamucil that just tears me up the next day. Those 5 little grams
are more potent than 14 or something like fiber one. Odd how that
works. :-)

Yeah, I get travel C... and during the move was well-plugged up. I
kept drinking the Metamucil... with no results. Finally, on the 4th or
5th day, things started happening.

Can't you add a fiber substitute during induction? And, do you
"have" to do induction? Its not mandatory. Seiously, why not cut
out the breads, sugars, junk, etc but stil eat your veggies?

Sugar free metamucil or equivalent is what is recommended I think.
Fortunately, I have no problem with that, other than the fact it
doesn't work as well as an apple or some good 7-grain cereal.

As for induction... I do think we need to lower the carbs to induction
like levels at the least, to see how George does. Although the new
medication he is on is looking promising, if it doesn't keep things in
hand, insulin could be the next step.

I probably wouldn't do full induction myself... but I think the added
support will help George with it.

Already have cut out breads, sugars and junk...

Well - if the doc say's so... :-) The weight loss alone will be
more beneficial to both your healths, and you know it. Doing it
together will help your success too. No tempting foods in the house.
You can both plan ahead for your day/week together. I would think
that would be easier than say - my situation - living with someone who
can eat the junk food and we keep it in the house. Temptation is
there, and must be controlled. Whereas if both parties in the house
are both eating the same way, you can limit those temptations.

We are sort of getting rid of the tempting foods bit by bit. Not all
at once... but as occasional treats. And replacing them with better
foods, we have a fair stash of tuna once we combined our can piles.
I'm building a stash of sardines, which we both have re-discovered.

As you say, makes meal planning much easier!

And yes, limiting the temptations is important. I figure I can live
like this for a bit, even adding carbs back in slowly. It'll make it
easier on George. I suspect for the long haul though, I'll be happier
with my carbs running somewhere between 100-150g. 'Specially since I
rarely like to go heavy on fats, even good fats. Meat fats I can
hardly stand. Overdressed salad, ugh.

On the good side... if it does increase my weight loss for a bit, that
can't be bad. My ankles are really not doing well as much as I have to
be on them right now.

stomache.

Okay, here are my suggestions.

1.) Keep drinking water. If alcohol is an important part of your
festivities then alternate one glass of water with one glass of _X_.

2.) Eat breakfast. See the great thread on being an "oater" for oatmeal
recipes.

3.) Don't eat anything that you didn't put on a plate first. If you've
got a ton of hors d'oevres just put them on the plate and LOOK at them
first. Did you choose only cheeses & flaky pastries or did you choose
crudite?

4.) Eat what you want, but don't eat until you're unpleasantly
full. Practice the "push away".

5.) Try to get some exercise in earlier in the day.

6.) It's okay to have feast days, you just have to STOP having feast
days. When your week-end is over you need to climb back on the wagon of
being a restrained eater and an exerciser.

Good luck, have fun!

Wendy

I like these suggestions but would also remind you that the purpose of
these gatherings is mainly for family and social interaction. Fill your
plate with a tiny portion of the foods you wish to try (unless it is salad
or a low cal veggie) and then wait a while before getting seconds.

We have a huge Thanksgiving Day celebration every year. My family is half
Jewish and half Catholic so T-day is our big get together. I am fortunate
in that I don't like much of the food (who puts grapes in Noodle Pudding and
why is Noodle Pudding served at Thanksgiving???). When I am questioned
about my lack of food, I always state that I attend for the company and
really appreciate the opportunity to be with my family! No one argues.
They all feel special that I came to see them.

Kugel. I usually see raisins in it. Grapes don't seem like such a
stretch. It's a reasonable holiday food if you are of Jewish heritage,
IMO.

That's a nice point.

This is gonna sound stupid, but a few years ago I heard someone say
something that worked for me: "you only taste the first and last bites
of something: the rest of the time is mindless eating" That means
only eat the "first and last bites" rather than a big huge heap of...

I'm going to sound naive, here, but what do you have for Canadian
Thanksgiving?

Oh well, if you load up your plate, and different foods are running
together, you got too much. Try a little of everything but not a lot
of any one thing. If you find later on you are physically hunger (not
likely to happen) have a healthy sanck after the big gathering

Finally, remember, the point of a family gathering to spend time with
people you don't often see. If you're busy talking and getting caught
up with your relatives, your mouth will be too busy talking to chew
food.

Folks:

This weekend will be the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. That in itself is
not bad. What's bad is that with my family committments, I have 3 dinner
festivities to attend. What an unfortunate time to get back on the
bandwagon.

Short of staying home and curling up in to the fetal position, any
suggestions on how to deal with this weekend? I just know that once all
that most excellent food is hot and piping, I'll be a slave to my stomache.

Cheers!

Alex

I think the traditional Thanksgiving spread is basically turkey or with all
the trimmings. In past years, we have also done ham as well.

Cheers!

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

As it turns out, I was able to change one of my committments from a dinner
to a breakfast brunch. The other two will remain dinner engagements on
Sunday and Monday. So, that's going to help me out staying on track.

Cheers!

Watch the great new program Queer Eye for the Straight guy about male
makeovers. it's great. HBO i think.

Watch baseball playoffs.

Rent a dog and take a long walk. Fall colors are here in Toronto and
it's sunny and golden where I live!

Check out a Whole Foods store if you have one and see all the great
things with no crummy addtives and fake flavors.

Rent an exercise video.

Start Christmas shopping NOW!

Google search your old mesages from when you were on a roll instead of
having one.

Buy and give some food to food banks . It;s Thanksgiving here and the
poor and homeless need food more than we do especially the children.

Join another kind of Internet Support group where you can help.

Go to a golf driving range.

See Lost in translation a recent new movie homeless
rent the complete earlier seasons of Will & Grace on video
and have a laugh

Compose more support for returnees.

I believe it's on Bravo, on Tuesday nights. I like it a lot, but DH
doesn't. May not be a guy thing?

I give thanks every year that we don't celebrate Thanksgiving ....or
Haloween, or July 4 (well, I suppose we wouldn't would we g) or any
other festivals that involve food except for Christmas. You have so
many more than we do - one is quite enough for me, and I can feel it
looming already.

Halloween is the best! It's very fun and my favorite. I loathe xmas, I can't
stand it, so I'd rather get rid of that one.

I still don't know what I'm going to be for Halloween yet this year; I've
got to think of something cool.

Not to a lot of them I guess, especially outside of areas with a lot of
gays. My ex-bf thought it was the funniest thing on tv. But, we're pretty
open-minded 'round these parts. : )
