Default Garcinia Cambogia

I have been reading msgs posted in this e-group for long...I have
gained nearly 40 pounds in just 8 months cos of thyroid.

Let me share with you a new thing I have discovered "garcinia
cambogia". I have tried portion eating, vegetarian diets, personal
trainer but lost not even a pound but infact gained some 6 pounds.
Last week I read about garcinia combogia and ordered garcinia cambogia
in its pure herbal form , from a website. I weighed myself today and I
have lost 2 pounds...was I happy to see the changed number on the
scale...damn right I was thrilled!!!.... I know its too early to be so
happy..but I was dieing to shed some pounds.

I have been taking so much info from these groups ....now I should
given some good info back too.

I couldn't agree more. And it only took off the first 20
pounds. Since then it's been exercise, portion control,
etc.

you need thyroid medications then.

carcinia cambogia or whatever does not treat your thyroid condition,
which is likely debilitating even if somehow it can stop your weight
gain.

You first need to make sure that your thyroid hormone level is
correct. Go to a doctor. Thyroid conditions are very common,
especially in women, and are often treatable. I take thyroid
hormones myself (the Russian hormones, synthroid does not work well
for me) and they are good things if you need them.

When you get your thyroid in check, come back here and see how some
posters here lost weight via eating no bad food, eating less, and
exercising a lot. It is not complicated, you just need to spend time
on it.

I am very skeptical about this garcinia cambodia. Numerous medications
have a short term effect on appetite and after a little while your
body becomes hungry again.

See http://tinyurl.com/qh7m

`` CONCLUSIONS: Garcinia cambogia failed to produce significant weight
loss and fat mass loss beyond that observed with placebo.''

Your 2 lbs loss can be all kinds of things.

From www.dietfraud.com

This herb is used in a program which "does not ...treat
any health problem of any kind..."

It's active ingredient seems to be hydroxy-citric acid

From Herbmed.com
HCA group (1500 mg) lost less weight (7 lb) than the placebo group (10
lb) in a 12 week study with 135 overweight adults on a high-fiber,
low-energy diet
(difference was not statistically significant) Heymsfield 1998

It's also known as citrimax, brindall berry, and "hydroxagen" in
hydroxycut, or hydroxycitric acid (HCA).

However, it has been shown in at least 3 published medical studies
to be NO more effective than a placebo for human weight loss.
It was sold with weight loss claims for about 20 years, merely because
it slowed weight *gain* (not even fat gain) in growing rats, in a very
old study.

Very nice that you lost 2 pounds, but the herb didn't do it.
This is the "post hoc, ergo propter hoc" (after this, therefore because
of this) logical fallacy.

In theory, HCA blocks de novo lipogenesis (turning glucose into fat)
but this doesn't happen very much with humans which might explain why
it works better in animal studies. If it has any benefit to humans it
would be to someone who is exercising and dieting anyway as it would
keep fat cells from taking up glucose before the muscles could get to
it.

Even if it did work well with humans, it wouldn't be a good idea for a
donut eating sedentary person to take because excess nutrients that
can't be stored as fat don't just magically "go away". It would cause
hyperglycemia (diabetes)

Conclusion: No magic bullet here, move along folks.

Your thyroid does not put food in your mouth.

From what I have read about HCA, if it has an effect in humans at all
it would be to reduce appetite. If that results in one "putting less
food in their mouths" and weight loss results, then this isn't a bad
thing as long as one knows that it's the "eat less" part that caused
the weight loss not the "magic pill".

That's why I take the middle view on supplements. Some are crap but
some can provide a dieter a little "help" as long as he is actually
"walking the walk" and not looking for the magic bullet.

In regards to this failed result, it was reported in JAMA after the test:

"Lack of benefit in Hemysfield study might be due to high fiber, low calorie
diet which caused controls to lose as much weight as the HCA group and was
unable to test curbing of appetite. Letters from Vladimir Badmaev and
Muhammed Majeed JAMA 1999: 282:233-234."
