well - the "danger" is gone now... its just the cleanup. I haven't
seen the news yet to see how bad the DC area got hit... So - here's
hoping all is well and safe and you get to have fun.

Y'all have power? How is the storm?

Wet. (And yes, I obviously have power.)

It mostly avoided us. There was a huge crash on interstate 95 in southern
CT this morning that was storm related - last I heard the cars had been at
a standstill for 3 hours after three tractor trailers jack-knifed across
all lanes. I've heard the winds are supposed to pick up this afternoon,
though.

BTW, I'm about to go out of town so I won't be online for a few days. I'm
also having a serious email attack going on with this account right now -
I'm putting filter after filter in after receiving 100's of emails
yesterday, but they're still coming in. I don't know what lovely thing I
did to deserve this. Is anyone else having it? I rarely read the email
there but I'll soon hit quota at this rate and could conceivably lose my
account. (I only have it as a favor - I graduated from Mt. Holyoke a
million years ago.)

Do you notice that most of them have the same subjects. I was getting all
sorts of virus infected emails but they all said either attachment, your
picture, your application.. etc. So I just went into my message rules (I
use outlook) and I created a message that deletes any message with those
particular words in the subject. Haven't received another since.

I did this with "Thank You" and missed an entire thread on my SCD group
but found it on a web site. Never had so many applications accepted in
my life. Even macs fell victim to Sobig F.

Just for clarification.

receiving emails has nothing to do with what operating system you run
on your computer. It has everything to do with how many people have
your email address in their address book when they get infected.

MAC users and Linix and other OS users are "affected" because of their
email address being in other peoples address books, but they aren't
"Infected" by the virus itself.

It's my impression that they got my address off of usenet posts. I can
see quite a lot of the addresses 'my mail' was bounced back from and
they're from posters I recognize, but have never corresponded with via
email.

I don't care if I'm not spreading the infection, it's being damned hard to
stamp out!

There's certainly no danger now, but there are a lot of annoyances.
Today my office was pretty much shut down, so we went out and did
stuff, where we ran into all kinds of idiosyncracies:

a) Tried to meet friends at a restaurant for lunch. They were closed
because their power had been off until right about noon, and it would
take them another hour or two to be ready to open. Went to another
restaurant (which was mobbed because all the people whose power was
out were going out to eat).

b) Went to clothing store where my friend picked out several things to
buy. They'd just opened and we were the first customers, and when the
cashier went to ring up Mary Anne's things the computer didn't work
because it had rebooted during the night. They just wrote down her
credit card number and let her take them.

c) Tried to go shop at Loehmann's, and the whole shopping center was
closed due to no power.

d) Went to Gold's Gym for massages with Ahmed. They were open but had
no running water so the toilets didn't work. We really wanted to go
before our massages, and tried the McDonald's and Shell Station across
the street, but neither had working toilets. (I probably shouldn't
admit this, but we just went back to Gold's and broke into the stall
with the loose latch and pee'd in the toilet, even though we couldn't
flush.)

e) Tried to eat at favorite sushi place in Fairfax on the way home,
but it was closed due to water problems. (In Fairfax they have
running water but say it might be contaminated so you have to boil it
first. Some restaurants are open, some aren't.) Went to another
place instead (also mobbed).

Minor, in the scheme of things, but it's not business as usual. We
are fortunate at my house. We never lost power, lost only a section
(though a big one) of one tree, and have no water problems. Many of
my friends have more damage and still have no power.

I am getting all kinds of emails. I think it is some kind of virus. I
won't open them I just delete them.

Holyoke? Is that the area near Southwick Mass?

I spent two months there this summer. I went to a large Rivercrossing
Mall at a Holyoke.
