Default Need to get started

Hi Peoples, I am trying to get the courage to get started on the
Atkins diet. I did it once before and I did lose weight, but I get so
bored. I don't really like eggs or cheese without crackers. I want
to do this, my doctor has told me I have to do this, but I am such a
cake and cookie and candy bar and chip person. Does anybody know how
to do a low carb diet and not crave all the forbidden C-foods? Also,
I need to mention, that I don't have a lot of money for all those
expensive substitute foods from the Atkins store. If I can make this
work for me, I want to try and get my 8 year old boy on it. He weighs
135 lbs. Thanks for any help you can give me.

The best investment you can make is to go out and buy the book. Read it
and start Atkins right away. Then read it again a few times so that
everything sinks in. Keep it around as a reference.

If you do Atkins correctly, you should not crave any of those high carb
foods starting after day 2 or 3.

You don't need any of those expensive subsitutes. If you would like a
substitute for something, a recipe for it is generally available by
doing a google search. http://tinyurl.com/xmvr

Hi GetAnnie, welcome to the group! Many people post recipes here (and they can
be Googled -- in fact, Google on this newsgroup for the word "recipe" and you'll
find a WEALTH of information and ideas), as well as tips and suggestions on how
to spice things up. I actually don't have eggs that often, although I did during
induction. How do you feel about veggies, fish, poultry and meat? I DO eat
cheese, but not all day long. Most of us have found that cravings for high-carb
foods disappear by about the 3rd day of induction, so it's really only the first
few days that are usually the hardest. I still occasionally have an urge, but
since I no longer have any of the temptations in my house, it's not a problem for
me (kind of like sex :-).

As far as money goes, you don't need to buy ANY of the low-carb products such as
shakes, bars, mixes, etc. You can do it ALL with REAL foods that you prepare
yourself. Any extra money you decide to be devote to your new way of eating is
best directed at kitchen helpers or good QUALITY food. Frankly, I eat better now
that I have since I was a little kid! It IS more work in the kitchen, but I'm
getting used to it.

Keep reading this newsgroup and you will find a LOT of great ideas!

"Can children or teenagers do Atkins?

The number of children and teens who are overweight or obese has reached epidemic proportions. The Atkins Nutritional ApproachTM can be followed by children and teens if it is recommended by a physician, who also monitors the program to ensure that the proper foods and supplements are consumed and that weight loss does not occur too rapidly, which could stunt growth. (emphasis added) But remember, young children tend to eat the way their parents do. That's why it's important that the whole family eat healthy, balanced meals. We suggest that you cut out sugar, processed food, junk food and other refined carbohydrates. The earlier parents instill good nutritional habits, the healthier their children will be-now and in the future. You can also set a good example in being physically fit."
