Sugar Alcohol: Do Their CALORIES count?
I have the typical maltitol-based candy bars and bags of Xylitol etc.
I am not counting the sugar alcohol carbs but do the calories count (ie does my body absorb the amount of calories in the sugar alcohols)? If I do the math for one of the candy bars (CarboRite Crispy Carrmel Bar) it comes out to 79 calories/bar instead of the 120 calories as shown on the label. Thanks, Josh |

Sugar Alcohol: Do Their CALORIES count?
The calories count, that's why they have to be listed.
One gram of various sugar alcohols are worth 2 to 3 calories apiece not the full 4 of regular carbs, that's why the count is lower. Details of the caloric value of sugar alcohols can be found on this site http://www.diabetes.ca/Files/SugarAl...cember2002.pdf. -- Jenny Weight: 168.5/137 Diabetes Type II diagnosed 8/1998 Low Carb 9/1998 - 8/2001 and 11/10/02 - Now http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean How to calculate your need for protein * How much people really lose each month * Water Weight Gain & Loss * The "Two Gram Cure" for Hunger Cravings * Characteristics of Successful Dieters * Indispensible Low Carb Treats * Should You Count that Low Impact Carb? * Curing Ketobreath * Exercise Starting from Zero * NEW! I was asking because some months ago it was revealed here that the calories on the labels may not be accurate. They may be values that are not fixed as we had originally assumed when we were doing our 9xfat grams 4x protein grams to calculate for "hidden carbs." This new factoid was revealed in an exchange of posts that I was asking regarding FLAX which, if the calories listed on the lables are correct, must have huge amounts of hidden carbs. But since people say it does NOT have hidden carbs, apparently they are including fiber carbs in with the total calorie total. Likewise I was wondering how many *real, absorbed by human beings* caloreis are in sugar alcohols. It seems to me possible if not probaible that fewer sugar alcohol calories are absorbed in vivo than are indicated on the labels. Josh |

Sugar Alcohol: Do Their CALORIES count?
The link below will tell you what lab research shows about calorie
absorption from sugar alcohols. You'll need Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to read it.
