Nitrate free bacon??
I would think Turkey Bacon would be nitrate free.

Where do you find this stuff? That's all Atkins mentions and yet I have talked to a butcher and he has never heard of such a thing. All bacon is Nitrated in order to cure it. Does anybody have a thought on this? And if so, where can I find it in Ontario, Canada? Thanks in advance. |

Nitrate free bacon??
The butcher never heard of Nitrate free bacon. That is surprising. You
will have to go to a high end grocery to get it. Don't know if you have Whole Foods in Canada, but where I am (Pittsburgh) I have a nice selection of Nitrate free bacon. Some co-ops would have it too. Curt "Snick" wrote in message ... Where do you find this stuff? That's all Atkins mentions and yet I have talked to a butcher and he has never heard of such a thing. I don't know what part of Ontario you are in, but they do have a Whole Foods
in Downtown Toronto. It's pricey though.. But here is the link for more info: http://www.wholefoods.com/stores/toronto/ "curt" wrote in message ... The butcher never heard of Nitrate free bacon. Trader Joe's carries some and sometimes the "health food" section in
the grocery stores. Read the labels, turkey bacon is no necessarily nitrate/nitrite free unless it specifically says so. BTW, it does seem to taste better and I just feel better feeding it to my family. Good luck finding it, Kathy |

I would expect that, as in Boston, you can find few in the meat case of some supermarkets, near the hams. Un-nitrited bacon and ham has a greyish color, because the nitrites make them pink, instead of the grey color of cooked pork. I've never seen it put in the case with other packaged bacon, always in the meat case. (I don't eat much bacon, though, so I go with the nitrited. I get the Hormel precooked 60-slice pack from Sams Club.) -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

When you say "Nitrate" free, does this also include "Nitrite" free? Are Nitrates and Nitrites the same thing? GT |

I just buy the cheapest bacon I can find, and soak it in water for about an hour or so, then I cook it. The nitrates (or most of them) soak out of the bacon, problem solved. PoohBear |
