I'm having a *planned* carb cheat tonight
as a planned once a week cheat is the best way for
me to stick with Atkins.

My cheat? A *small* (as small as I could find) baked
sweet potato slathered in butter, sour cream
and bacon bits. :-)

i am not on atkins, but when i am on a diet, i also allow myself to
cheat once in a while. i usually plan it too. i have found that this
is the best way to stay on a diet, and i have gotton th best results
when i do this. my mother is a doctor and also runs a weight loss
clinic, she explained to me that it is good to do this because it is
inevitable that you wil skrew up once in a while on a diet, so the
best thing to do is screw up in a controlled manner, and get over it.
for long term success, it's really important to learn that going off
track won't ruin everything. if you allow yourself to skrew up, ou
won't go overboard when you do (like eating several instead of just
one). also, planning on eatng something off the diet helps you to not
feel guilty when you eat it. cuz, if your gonna feel guilty, what's
the point? one more piece of advice: try to allow yourself a
reasonable quantity of the desired food, instead of thinking that if
your going to do something "bad" it doesn't matter how bad - it does.

Hehe. My sins seem to have led to a little weight loss. I'd
better not interpret that as tacit permission to sin more
frequently!

I'm losing weight, just not as fast as I would if I were stricter. I
rarely feel deprived and I've lost a little over 25 lbs so far.

I DO know I
can't go back to wantonly gobbling carbs though. It also would be
nice if I could eat most fruits and veggies.

Why can't you eat most veggies? There aren't that many that are carby.

That's really good advice. And it doesn't just matter "how bad" because of
how it affects your weight loss, going overboard on something you're not
used to eating regularly can make you feel really ill. Not just carbs,
doesn't matter what your plan is. When I did a vegetarian diet, the first
time I went off it and ate a big ol' burger I felt like I had a brick in my
tummy. When I did low-fat, if I cheated and had something fried I thought I
was gonna hurl. That sugar rush feeling I get from too many carbs is
what helps me keep my cheats more moderate .

Gee, this must be one of the few places and circumstances where I
would feel like I have sinned because I ate a peach. But I did
eat it, and I do feel a bit guilty. It wasn't even ethereal.
That is the first big piece of fruit I have had since I started
this WOE ca the beginning of August. Other than that I have just
had a few blueberries and raspberries.

After reading the title, and then the post, is it any wonder why people
believe what they do about this way of eating?

Hehe. I was actually writing it a bit tongue in cheek. It did
feel odd though, since it is the first big piece of fruit I have
had since I started LCing at the beginning of August.

I'm no hero. I'm very afraid to eat something like a bite of a
brownie--and my daughter's birthday is this weekend. I have NO
idea what I will end up doing. I just hope if I have some cake,
it will be just a bite or two--and that that does not reignite my
desire for such things. It is SO nice not wanting all the things
that used to beckon so beguilingly!

Sooner or later your will sin. You will learn how your body
works. Some foods I can eat without gaining. Others I should never
touch.
Whenever I gain more than 3-4 lbs I go back to basic. You may not
have gaines one ounce.

Otherwise for lunch I tried making a pizza-type thing using a
portobello mushroom as a crust. (I either read about that here or
on some LC list.) That was decent, but not as good as the "pizza"
made with the nuked cheese instead of the crust. The mushroom
made the overall flavor less pronounced.

A large peach is about 12.5g carbs. It could have been worse, you could have
made the pizza with an empty calorie, next to no nutrient crust. Just watch
your carbs for the rest of the day.

Why don't you just say to yourself right now "I will have two bites of
cake" and that way you WILL know what will happen, because you'll be ready.
Also, think of this as an incentive not to eat a lot of cake: you might
feel like crap afterwards, even if it doesn't make you gain any weight.
And two bites is enough for the flavor experience.
