Default Hospitals ban Atkins diet

UK hospitals are banning Atkins for their patients. Man, I hope I never
get sick in that country. I wonder if they'll force that piece of bread
down my throat -- or put potatoes in my IV?

Seems like a lot of ill-informed hysteria. As you say, who'd want people
like this treating them?

Have to wonder why people are reportedly dropping to the floor all over the
place in the UK from doing Atkins, but you just never hear about it here
(US).

Jake.

The deaths etc and problems described could possibly be attributed to other
factors and the Atkins diet isn't as much of a contributory factor as
thought.

I'd guess the anti-Atkins lobby in the UK is doing a better job than in the
US; e.g. the flour people hiring "eminent" researcher Dr. Susan Jebb to damn
low carb, i.e. flour free, diets. Also somehow persuading the media to run
scare stories about people dying like flies from lack of spuds and rice.

The BBC sent me a mail containing the following:
A BBC programme called Real Story is doing an investigation into the
diet and would like to know more about your experiences and opinions on
the subject.

If you would like to help them with their enquiries please fill in the
attached survey and email it to:

So you could send something to her to help balance out the disinformation..

Default Rachel Huskey (was Hospitals ban Atkins diet

Does anyone know who this Rachel Huskey is who gets mentioned in the
article, where they say:

"...followed the death of 16-year-old American Rachel Huskey, who died from
heart failure after trying to lose weight.
A team of experts who investigated her death said it was probably due to the
way the Atkins diet had upset her metabolism."

I wish I knew more about this. Have to see if I can google her up.

I remember this coming up the last time. They even had the mom on Donahue
during the big Atkins/Ornish debate. It was sickening. They even admitted
that they have no proof one way or another, but went ahead and presumed to
lay it at the feet of the diet, which her mother was also on at the time
(great way to scar a person, make her feel it was her fault). However, the
actual facts of the case point to an elytrolyte imbalance caused by
diuretics. The mom claimed she wasn't taking anything, but the diet itself
could not induce that sort of imbalance, and you know how 16 year old girls
will do *anything* no matter how dangerous it is, to lose weight faster.
