Default ugh Pain :(

I know this is a diet NG but I do see a lot of talk of exercising here so I
thought I would post a question.
Yesterday during my workout I used a nautilus machine for abs. I didn't use an
enormous amount of weight and I don't think I pushed very hard. At the end of
my workout I was comfortable and not in pain.
However, today is a different story. My abs are killing me. Not just a little
pain from over stretching but I NEED NARCOTICS kind of pain. It's even a
little difficult to stand up straight, or to sit for long. The pain is
starting to radiate around my rib cage and into my back.
I have even considered going to the ER. But feel a little silly doing that,
especially if they just send me home w/ Tylenol.
What could I have done wrong w/ my work out? and what can I do to alleviate
the pain? I already have a bitchen' cold so this doesn't help at all
Thanks,
~Kat

When I first started lifting weights last fall, I overdid it once and
couldn't use my arms for a couple days.... Had to have someone else spoon
feed me! Just kidding.... It's normal. It will get better if you continue
to work out. Take ibuprofen, do alot of stretching, and in a couple days,
do more crunches. Drink lots of water too.

Sounds like DOMS. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Just in a bad
case. You worked your abs in a way you haven't in a long, long time,
I'm sure. And because of that, you are sore. Tylenol, Ibuprofen
should help. Pain may get more severe the 2nd day then begin to
subside.

In my personal experience I'll find that if I exrecise on day 1, day 2
starts out fine, but as the day goes on the pain begins. Day 3 is
usually the hardest and then day 4 & 5 it begins to subside. For
me, a good case of doms can last a week.

I've found a few things really help the symptoms a great deal.

1. Proper stretching and warmup BEFORE and AFTER exercise.
2. Light cardio work day 2 and 3.
3. Continued stretching each day.

And then others will suggest that suppliments like glucosomine and
chondrotin will also help with doms pain. I can't say as I noticed a
significant improvement when taking those.

maybe you can indeed take tylenol... Although I would suggest not
taking anything.

I ended up taking some, it helps but not much. So I doubt I will take anymore.

try calling your doctor, maybe he will have some suggestions?

My health insurance changed and I need to find a new doc. I had an apointment
set up w/ one and then found that my ins didn't cover her. This was after 2
months of waiting for the apt.

complaining about in in newsgroups helps a lot, seriously.

As the day has gone by I feel a bit better, but my 4 year old keeps telling me
to stand up straight! lol

you just learned a little exercise lesson. no real damage was
done. You can still exercise other parts of your body (walk, bicycle,
upper body, squats etc).

I'll be heading back to the Y tonight lol .. but no sit ups for me for a while.

What they all said, nothing too serious, just seriously painful. One thing
you might try doing at this stage is put ice on your abs. You have started
an inflammatory process which is part of the reason for the pain. One of
the things that helps is ice, it reduces the circulation temporarily, cools
the nerves so they don't fire as quickly or as often, and helps flush out
the inflammation exudate, which will all help kill some of the pain. I
would recommend to clients who see me 10-20 minute sessions with the ice.
Might be worth a shot.

Thanks, I'll give the ice a try.

Nope, that hurt just south of the peehole. :-)

Honestly - with all the crunches I do for bootcamp - I can sit and do
over 100 crunches in about 2 mins and not have any muscle soreness the
next day. BUT - if I go to the gym and do a real ab workout w/
weights - yes, I'll feel it if I increase the weight from what I'm
used to.

That is always one of the stumbling blocks for people to get into
weight training and workingout. They initially feel the doms and
take a week off to recover. THe thing is, if you do light cardio the
next day and then do a light workout the following day, you'll find
recovery happens faster. And the more you do your workouts, the less
doms you'll feel.

For example - hypothetical situation. You do weighted ab workout with
20lbs of weight. That first week you are sore. But then you continue
with the workout, maybe since you are sore, you only do the workout w/
15lbs the next time, and when the soreness goes away you go back to
20. Then you do that for a few weeks, and you find you don't have any
soreness following any longer. So after a few weeks you are ready to
add weight - so you go to 25lbs. You might find you are sore again
for a few days. But you'll find the recovery time is shorter.

Many people find they don't mind the pain of doms. Its a "good"
pain. SOme people feel they aren't getting a good workout if they
don't have some doms following. That really isn't the case - but its
more of a mental thing for some people. Pain = work.

Go for a walk on the treadmill. And then try working out a different
area of your body. (arms, shoulders, etc or lowerbody - legs).

ugh ... change of plans.
I thought I could work thru it.
I have started vomiting
I'm just going to bed when DH gets home from work.
