Default breakfast cereal is a joke...

I never buy it, so I didn't even realize how BAD the nutrition profile on
most cereal is. My 6 yr old daughter was trying to talk me into buying one
of the "fad" cereals based on some toy or character, so I was checking out
the nutrition info... This stuff will KILL you! Massive amounts of sugar,
nearly no protein OR fiber... The only nutrition is in the spray-on
vitamins... but the actual content of the cereal is total crap. I was
amazed. Maybe I shouldn't be. No wonder there's so many hyperactive kids!
A glass of ovaltine and a piece of whole wheat toast would be 110% better
than a bowl of breakfast cereal. Oh the horrors!!!

breakfast cereal marketed to kids has ALWAYS been crap!

i use to allow my children to have a bowl of it, with milk, as an
afternoon snack.
NEVER before school!

It was mine too! I remember being 6 years old and getting into a fight with
my dad. The next thing I know, I am making a bowl of cocoa puffs for lunch.
The box was unopened and I remember thinking "wow, its all gone now" after I
finished eating. I was addicted to cereal and milk until I stopped drinking
milk at 30.

I agree with you det, most of it is just crap. However, I do eat All
Bran with fresh fruit chopped up in it, and I find this satisfying and
it provides the necessary fibre. Also, I eat porridge oats sometimes,
also with fruit in it or cooked as porridge. I don't go near all the
sugar coated and other varieties though - they're just empty calories.

Yes, alot of it is crap - especially the kids cereals. ANd ya know
what - on a side by side comparison, there isn't much nutritional
difference between a cereal like coco pebbles and raisen bran. So, I
gave up - one battle I didn't want to fight with BF and DS on. They
pick their cereals out. And w/ DS - he can have a bowl of cereal,
but he also gets a scrambled egg, and oj, or a protein shake or
something else w/ sufficient protein to keep his energy levels
stabilized and hunger stabalized until lunch time.

And you ever notice w/ kids that you can't get them to eat just
cheerios any more. They want the sweetest, most sugar coated stuff.
But even the ones we don't think of as being loaded with sugar really
are.

I don't eat cereal often - maybe one bowl a month, if that.

Try old fashioned oatmeal with raisins or Chex.

Study shows: children will always go for the cereal with the toy in
it. Go figure! Worse than cereal: sugary soft drinks. My son never
liked soda - until college when he discovered rum and coke.

Same here & DH. Comparing notes with people at work who have lost weight
found the same thing, we compared the size of bowls we used to eat cereal.
