Is on a 1000 calorie diet and says he feels no hunger. I try to cut
back by just 300 calories and wake up hungry in the middle of the
night. What gives?

Your son is learning to ignore his hunger signals. This is not a good
thing.

Starvation mode turns off hunger until the body has decided it has
canabalized enough muscle mass. You likely aren't in starvation
mode. He may well be.

If he got to 1000 by cutting carbs more than by cutting fat, he
likely went into ketosis. Ketosis turns off hunger in a way that
minimizes canabalization of muscle mass. You likely aren't in
ketosis. He may well be.

The two options aren't completely opposites but there is a
difference in effect on muscle mass that isn't all that well
understood.
