Default Pedometers

I'm interested in buying a pedometer to track how much I walk a day.
There are quite a number of brands/styles out there with a variety of
features, and the price range I've seen is wide, from "free with the
purchase of a salad and a bottle of water" at McDonalds to almost $50.

Does anyone have a recommendation WRT features I might find useful?

My plan is to figure out my current average number of steps, then, try
to add what seems to be an easily managed number of additional steps
every day or two until I am walking about 10,000 steps (about 5 miles)
a day.

Hi Nat,

I ordered mine from the AD(diabetes)A and it just came yesterday. You
can buy just the pedometer or the pedometer with a little book of tips
on how to increase your walking (that's what I bought). Costs about
$20 for both. The reasons I bought this one are - 1. the catalog came
to my house and I could order over the web; 2. I've had pedometers in
the past, but they had to be calibrated; and, 3. this one doesn't need
calibration. You just clip it on and walk. It has no additional
features. It just counts your steps. The next day, you hold the reset
button for 2 seconds and start over. The little book is informative
and kind of inspiring. They even send you an extra battery (one of
those long-life, little round ones) with the kit. I'm happy with it.

I don't know how long this phase will last for me, so I didn't want to
spend big bucks, and I can always move up later if I want to. It was
fun today to check how far I had gone. It's easy to use and designed
to be easy to open so you can check your progress just by flipping it
open.

The kit is called "Small Steps, Big Rewards".

It's unobtrusive and didn't get in my way at all, and I'm only 5'4"
and weigh 118, so alot of things are cumbersome for me.

I did find out that I have a long way to go to reach 10,000 steps but,
according to the little book, adding as little as 10 minutes a day,
will, over time, get you to your goal.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Mary Sue

Wow. Didn't know there was a big deal for people to hit five miles a day, but I
guess in this one case I'm very fortunate... I don't need the pedometer or
anything because I walk over six miles a day just to get to school and back!

Yay for me!

I had two from McDonald's and they only counted every other step. Bought
one from Wal-Mart for $8 (US) and a little change. Used it on some measured
distances and it has been very accurate.

I think I saw an ad that says Special K cereal has one in the box... :-)

I like my Oregon Scientific model with a pulse meter. They even make one
with an FM radio...

I got one from the my grilled chicken salad happy meal too and mine
works just fine. Important to recognize that sometimes pedometers have
a tough time calculating distance if you are wearing heels, etc. Great
thing to have though and it totally motivates you to pay attention to
how many steps you're taking towards burning those cals.

My teenager has one of the McDonald's stepometers.

The one he has is very inaccurate. Even taking into consideration that
it counts every other step, the count by the stepometer vs a manual
count shows the stepometer undercounts, often by quite a lot.

OTOH, it sometimes counts when he's not even walking. Yesterday, for
example, he had it on while he was a passenger in the car, and the
stepometer kept adding steps while we were driving. The vibrations of
the car caused that perhaps?

I don't know if there's something wrong with the one he got or if
they're all like his.

Ah, well, I didn't expect much from an adult Happy Meal toy. :-)

At any rate, the local McD's doesn't have them anymore.
