How to acquire a "rugged look"?

So, what is it that constitutes a "rugged look", and how would one go towards such an appearance. i A couple of quick thoughts -- strictly my perceptions he - relatively low bodyfat - a reasonable level of muscularity -- not necessary lots, but some visible muscle is needed - skin that looks a little weathered and tan rather than smooth and white -- the man needs to look like he spends time outdoors Beyond these are, I think, some issues of style -- haircut and clothing choices. Clothes should be appropriate to the situation but shouldn't look too studied and "careful" -- the man should wear the clothes rather than the clothes wearing the man. And the clothes should fit well -- not too loose or too tight -- and shouldn't be "girly". If the hair isn't too thin, a little length is good, but not below the collar -- and it shouldn't be too carefully combed into place or slicked down. If the man doesn't have a lot of hair, shorter is better, without weird combing to cover up bald spots. Also important, and even harder to define, is the man's bearing. Posture, walk, and manner must convey an easy self-confidence. They should be free rather than contained, but not sloppy. They should project energy and ease. Anyway, opinions will obviously differ :-) Chris |

That just makes you seem like a big baby. You need to lean out a big, have a large, square jaw, grow slight facial hair (not heavy, or else you'll pass into "dirty" territory), and carry yourself like you have some "cajones." The rest is commentary. i -- Martin Shuster / martin dot shuster at yale dot edu |

You need to read the feminine press about what to do to prevent skin aging
and keep a perfect skin and all. Note everything they tell you to do, then do the exact opposite : bake in the sun for hours without using a suncream (skin cancer does wonders for that rugged look thing!), try to get dehydrated, do not use *any* kind of skin crean - ever, use the most abrasive soap you can find, use only *real* soap, not these fake soap-less soaps... Basically, "rugged" look usually means having your skin sun-tanned and ****ed up twenty years beyond your real age... |

Some men look "rugged". Some others look like they are big babies. I
am not exactly sure what constitutes the difference exactly. I always considered "rugged" to be a euphemism for either an ugly man, or a man weathered to look significantly older than his actual age. -- jamie ) "There's a seeker born every minute." |

Ugly, but rugged, and you could argue handsome because of it. There is a certain draw guys like that have with many women. -Larry |

Then, rose chicks don't help. Somebody made a right comment -- work out outside, get some redneck-like rugged skin. A couple of scars will help too. Just remember -- once you get all that, there's no easy way back. Don't smile -- wear a grim look. Or, if you smile, get an iron tooth or at least a tooth gap. yourself like you have some "cajones." Which for some reason reminds me of fitness models on stage -- why do they carry their arms like they have some turpentine applied to their armpits? Unnatural. |

I don't think you necessarily have to be in shape (whatever that means) to have a rugged look (according to my view of that term), but you definitely need some muscle mass, mainly upper body, too. Muscular arms, shoulders, help a lot. You can have a gut and still look rugged, but you need to have a bit of attitude and an air of confidence....if you look like you can open a can of whoop ass on someone, that helps... |
