Default Pedometer Challenge: Day 1 (Monday)

Welcome to the pedometer challenge! Each day I will start a thread for
us to post our results from the previous day. I plan to include a line
about my goal and a line about my results in my posts. Please feel free
to use any format that you like for your posts.

Goal: 10,000 steps plus regularly scheduled program

Actual: 13,400 steps + 50:00 elliptical at gym (818 cals, said the
machine). It was really nice out yesterday and I was able to get a long
walk in at lunch.

Goal: 10,000
Actual: 9100

I was tied to my office yesterday with a system problem and didn't get a
chance to do much walking during the day. Last night was not much better as
I was late getting home and didn't have a chance to jump on the treadmill.
Saturday and Sunday I had a total of 30,000+ so I don't feel too bad about
the total for Monday.

I received another free pedometer Sunday at a FitFestival sponsored by the
MetroParks. I now have 3 of these things

I wouldn't feel badly at all about 9,100! I think that latter in the
week I may have some problems meeting my goal due to uncooperative
weather (although it now looks like Ivan may to west of the Appalachians
in which case I may be able to get outside after all). I figured that
I'd try to do more on the nice days to "make up" for the predicted bad
weather.

BTW, what kind of bike did you get again? I test rode a Trek 1500 and a
Klein Aura V last night. I liked the Klein a bit better, I think,
although the Trek was very nice and felt more familiar. The Klein had a
smoother ride and the Trek was a bit stiffer (but not bad, just
stiffer). I would like to test ride a Specialized Allez and a Giant
OCR-1 before deciding for sure.

I also took a 30 minute bike maintenance class with a friend who is new
to cycling. I was able to tune up my current bike for my commute in
today afterward ;-) Nothing fancy but there was a noticeable
improvement. We plan to take the "advanced" class (set of three
classes) when it is offered this fall.

I have the Trek 1800C http://www.trekbikes.com/bikes/2004/road/1800c.jsp
One of the regular Saturday morning riders has the same bike. He's always
amazed that at 5'3" I have a 54cm bike and at 6'1" he has a 58cm bike. I
just have long legs for my heightg

Have you tried out any of the Trek WSD (women specific design) bikes? I
didn't try any when I was looking but I hear they're nice, too.

Where did you find the bike maintenance classes? I would love to take a few
courses of this type. We had some basics when I took the training for the
bike patrol but nothing in depth. A couple of the patrolmen are great at
bike repair and have shown me a few things but I would like to know more.
My bike shop will let me watch while they do some minor repairs, too. I'm
going to check with a local bike club to see if they have anything
available.

54 does sound really large for your height but I'm sure that they did a
fit and that it's good. I mean, I think that you'd know by now if it
*wasn't* a good fit!

No, I am too tall for the WSD geometry

Where did you find the bike maintenance classes?

At the same local bike shop that I test rode those to bikes. The other
two models that I am interested in are at a different shop.

A good bike shop certainly figures into your bike purchase. There are bike
shops closer than the one where I bought my bike but they just didn't have
the service reputation. I walked into the bike shop a couple weeks ago with
a flat tire and they fixed it free of charge since I already had the new
tube in and just couldn't pry the tire back on the rim. Tony said when it
came time for new tires we would switch to a tire that was easier to change.
He said even he had trouble changing my type of tire.

Yes, I asked around a lot about which LBS folks preferred. One seems to
think that a penis is required equipment so I eliminated them (I
experienced this treatment as did two other people who I spoke with
seperately). I tried Peformance in Chapel Hill (the catalog place) and
they are good for clothing but were unhelpful with the new bike thing.
That left All-Star and Cycling Spoken Here. They carry different
product lines and I intend to try bikes from both shops. One down, one
to go... ;-)
