I took my first Pilates class and it really kicked my fanny. I had no
idea that it was going to be this hard. I had considered myself fairly
flexible until now.

I hope my tailbone heals up over the weekend so I can go to the class on
Monday...

I had the same problem when I started s Just happened to be getting my
checkup that week, so I asked the doc about it. She said I had lost the fat
in my butt and needed to build up the muscles to replace the padding. It
worked. I can Roll like a ball all day now g

Keep at it, Amy. Pilates makes me feel good all day - taller, more limber;
and I'm convinced it has made all my clothes fit better.

Thanks. My tailbone feels better today, so I'll go back to class
tonight. I'm planning to take a small towel for padding during the roll
sessions.

Could you tell me more about Pilates in general? My darling BF has arranged
for me to go to a personal trainer and I suspect she is into Pilates. Alas,
I am in New Orleans and Kenner a lot this month and put off scheduling until
after October begins. Meanwhile, it sounds as though you had quite a
workout . My understanding is that it was kind of 'fluff'. I realize it is
an uneducated opinion! Educate me, please.

Carol,

Thanks. I've looked at that and spent far too much time at the book store
with books I didn't intend on buying reading and looking at pics. I guess
my question could have been phrased differently. All the websites and books
show these lovely slow movements with bizarre equipment. (There is
something looks like a torture rack used in some studios!) I guess what I
see written is not congruent with a post that indicates that the OP had a
terrific work out. What am I not getting? I do have one Palates tape I
bought at the store and went through it several times but frankly, I think
it was a bad tape - I can't remember the name of it, but it wasn't Windsor
or something but it seemed fairly complex with only three reps of each
movement.

Something else to consider - I have been voted most likely to die of a
closed head injury during aerobics. A couple of my tennis partners have
suggested I have an ambulance parked outside the courts while I play! I am
sort of not coordinated. It would seem that Palates requires some
coordination. It is very frustrating for me as I spent 14 years in dance
and still trip over my own feet!

I know that all exercises are not meant for anyone but does Palates really
build muscle and burn calories like tennis or weights or the treadmill?

Hey there.

Last night was my second class, and the regular instructor was there.
Her class was less frenetic than the first (taught by the instructor who
normally does the step aerobics class...), but not less of a workout.

She started by explaining the theory behind pilates--lengthening and
strengthening the body's "core," focusing on breathing, focusing on your
body and knowing what it can and cannot do. There aren't a lot of reps
involved, but that doesn't make it less intense. Because you focus on
"engaging" certain muscles, breathing, and flowing, graceful movements,
you actually feel the exercise more than if you did, say, 100 crunches.
And, as a bonus, all of that concentration really tires you out--I was
very relaxed and calm after last night's session. And my tailbone wasn't
as much of an issue this time--I placed a hand towel under my butt while
doing some of the moves, and that helped a lot. The instructor suggested
using a thicker mat (we're using the gym's yoga mats) or another blanket
underneath. Oh, and the only equipment we used was a yoga block.

So give it a whirl and have fun. I'm already more concious of my
posture, and find that I'm sitting up a little straighter and sucking my
navel to my spine (whenever it occurs to me...).

The only bizarre equipment I use:
are two mats from the lawn chairs and my battle scarred bod.

At five foot nothin' I need all the lengthening I can get! ;-) I love love
love Pilates (no equipment but a cushy mat)

I've been doing Winsor pilates since last December and here's the thing that
amazes me most: when I walk now, it is *impossible* for me to NOT pull my
navel to spine. You just do it unconsciously. And after all those years of
mom telling me to sit up or stand up straight, if she could only see me now

The instructor claims she's grown and inch since she started doing
pilates--I would sure like to an inch taller--I'd be a whole 5'2"!
