Default Beauty regimen question

I am 40-ish and rarely wear makeup. But I've been realizing lately just
how many beauty regimens I've built up over the years. I'd like to cut
some if they're useless and I sometimes think I ought to wear
makeup and/or contacts. Do you do these things? Do you do more?

1.) Pluck & trim eyebrows (had them shaped with electrolysis once)
2.) Bleach brunette facial hair (and pluck occasional beard hairs)
3.) Have hair cut & color & foiled every 6 weeks (this is a BIG expense)
4.) Shave pits every day, below knee 2x week and above knee occasionally
5.) Pumice callouses on feet, keep toenails cut & polished
6.) Use cuticle remover on cuticles and orange sticks and buff fingernails
7.) Use wart remover patches for rare wart here or there (not genital!)
8.) Brush teeth 2x day with whitening toothpaste, floss daily
9.) Put whitening peroxide solution on teeth at night.
10.) Treat chapped lips (mostly from peroxide) with lip balm
11.) Wash face 2x daily with face soap
12.) Use face lotion with sunscreen and body lotions as needed
13.) I will occasionally, in the winter, go for tanning sessions.

The things I don't do (or do only very rarely):
1.) Wear eye makeup of any kind (my eyes get red & irritated easily)
2.) Wear perfume (it seems like everyone is sensitive to chemicals lately)
3.) Wear blush (I have good skin tone without it)
4.) Wear lipstick (I do occasionally, but it always makes my lips chapped)
5.) Curl eyelashes (I possess such a tool but don't use it)
6.) Wear cold cream or some sort of night cream on my face
7.) I don't usually have a manicure.
8.) Wear contacts instead of glasses (I used to but allergies irritated my
eyes so much that the contacts were uncomfortable and I just stopped
wearing them.)
9.) I don't do anything with my hair besides wash it and occasionally
use conditioner. I've got a short curly cut and I don't even comb it, I
just run my fingers through it. No gels, no dryer, nothing whatsoever.

Am I missing something important that everyone else does?

Does anyone believe this whitening polish works? I've found that the
peroxide gives me chapped lips and the lip balm makes my chin break out,
so all in all my teeth might be whiter but my mouth and face now look
awful so who can tell?

Oh, and I guess that eating a healthy diet with lots of omega-3's and
water is important for my skin, as is getting enough sleep and exercising
frequently. In the largest sense those are part of my beauty regimen.

What about you?

Default Beauty regimen question

I do the majority of these things except the teeth whitening thing
because It burns my gums.
I do have a pedicure and my nails done every 2 weeks without fail.
I do not tweeze, I have my brows waxed.
I do wear makeup, full face every day except an occasional Sunday
morning.
I wear perfume everyday as it is part of my getting out of the shower
routine. (one of 2-3 Estee Lauder scents that are sorta "my" scents,
Knowing, Cinnabar and Youth Dew)
I have long thick/curly brunette hair so I do work it everyday (curling
iron, hotrollers, gel, mousse etc) people say it's "Big Hair" LOL
I do wear a moisturizer at night - religiously. I'm 36 and I have been
doing this since I was 16, I have no facial wrinkles(yet) I also am not
a sun worshiper, I have no desire to be all wrinkled and have skin
cancer. I get plenty of sun here in central Texas that I have enough
color

As I get older I find myself paying more and more attention to my
appearance, not for others..but for myself. Plus, I am diagnosed with
dysthymic disorder which I am choosing not to treat with medications but
in lifestyle changes, food changes and self awareness so I feel that a
solid routine of pampering myself is important to that.

I'm interested in your comment about the omega3's and your skin. Is that
a proven fact or simply supposition?

Default Beauty regimen question

OK, here are my answers. I've been pretty minimalist with regard to
this sort of stuff, though lately I've been getting interested in
doing more. This is probably partly due to weight loss and resulting
greater interest in appearance, and partly due to Elise's influence
:-). I'm 55, by the way.

1.) Pluck & trim eyebrows (had them shaped with electrolysis once)

I never do this. When I was in high school I used to pluck hairs that
grew between the two brows, but after a while they stopped growing
there. I haven't plucked my eyebrows since I was 16 or so.

2.) Bleach brunette facial hair (and pluck occasional beard hairs)

I pluck chin hairs but don't bleach anything. Just recently I tried
wax to remove some hair above my upper lip that's become a little dark
over the years. This seemed to work ok, so will repeat occasionally.

3.) Have hair cut & color & foiled every 6 weeks (this is a BIG expense)

I get mine cut every 4 weeks or so -- at the Hair Cuttery, which is
cheap. (I have a regular person there who knows what I like -- just
went this morning, in fact.) I've never had my hair colored, but am
toying with the idea now that I'm getting more gray hairs.

4.) Shave pits every day, below knee 2x week and above knee occasionally

I always shave armpits and below knees on Fridays, since I go for a
massage that day. Sometimes I shave another time during the week. My
body hair is sparse and grows slowly, so this seems to suffice. I
never have shaved above the knee -- have no discernible hair there.
(I have a fair complexion and fair-colored body hair.)

5.) Pumice callouses on feet, keep toenails cut & polished

I've never pumiced my feet or polished my toenails. I do cut my
toenails, of course.

6.) Use cuticle remover on cuticles and orange sticks and buff fingernails

Never do this. I don't even know what cuticle remover is. Why does
one want to remove one's cuticles?

7.) Use wart remover patches for rare wart here or there (not genital!)

I've never tried this. I don't think I've ever had a wart. I do have
freckles and a few moles, but just ignore them.

8.) Brush teeth 2x day with whitening toothpaste, floss daily

I do this, though I don't use whitening toothpaste. I use Sensodyne,
as my teeth are very cold sensitive.

9.) Put whitening peroxide solution on teeth at night.

I've never done this. What sort of solution is this? Does it work?
I wouldn't mind having whiter teeth, certainly.

10.) Treat chapped lips (mostly from peroxide) with lip balm

If my lips are chapped I treat them. This occurs mostly in the
winter.

11.) Wash face 2x daily with face soap

In theory I do this, but in practice it doesn't always happen twice.
Sometimes it just gets wet in the shower.

12.) Use face lotion with sunscreen and body lotions as needed

I don't do this as often as I should.

13.) I will occasionally, in the winter, go for tanning sessions.

I've never done this. Isn't it bad for you?

The things I don't do (or do only very rarely):
1.) Wear eye makeup of any kind (my eyes get red & irritated easily)

Just lately I've been experimenting with eye makeup. (Elise, who
works at a big department store, has given me some makeup samples, so
I've been playing with them.

2.) Wear perfume (it seems like everyone is sensitive to chemicals lately)

Ditto. I used to, but I worry about it bothering people. Very
occasionally I will wear it when I go out.

3.) Wear blush (I have good skin tone without it)

As for the eye makeup, I've been playing with it lately. My skin is
pale but I flush easily (exertion, cold, heat, etc. all cause it --
minor rosacea).

4.) Wear lipstick (I do occasionally, but it always makes my lips chapped)

I wear lipstick pretty often, though usually I just put it on in the
morning and it kind of fades away. My lips are pale without it.

5.) Curl eyelashes (I possess such a tool but don't use it)

Another of my new toys in the past few weeks.

6.) Wear cold cream or some sort of night cream on my face

I usually put on moisturizer before bed. My skin is very dry, left up
to itself.

7.) I don't usually have a manicure.

I've never had one in my life. Nor do I ever polish my nails. I cut
them with a nail clipper when they get at all long. I hate the
feeling of long nails. (Comes from being a fairly serious pianist in
my youth.)

8.) Wear contacts instead of glasses (I used to but allergies irritated my
eyes so much that the contacts were uncomfortable and I just stopped
wearing them.)

I wore contacts all the time for 30+ years, but when my eyes started
changing in my late 40s I stopped liking them. Now I just wear
glasses.

9.) I don't do anything with my hair besides wash it and occasionally
use conditioner. I've got a short curly cut and I don't even comb it, I
just run my fingers through it. No gels, no dryer, nothing whatsoever.

This is about all I do, though I do comb or brush my hair. It's
straight -- just a tiny bit of wave. I use a hair dryer at the gym
after showering, usually. In the morning I just let it dry on the way
to work.

Am I missing something important that everyone else does?

I'm not the one to ask :-).

Does anyone believe this whitening polish works? I've found that the
peroxide gives me chapped lips and the lip balm makes my chin break out,
so all in all my teeth might be whiter but my mouth and face now look
awful so who can tell?

As I said above, I know nothing about this. But this doesn't sound
like it's a good tradeoff for you.

Actually, one thing I do that you haven't mentioned is use lotions on
the rest of my body, bath oil in the bath, etc. I don't do these on a
regular basis but do them often. My skin tends to be quite dry. I
also think keeping it moisturized may help with skin tone, which is
particularly important since I want to minimize the saggy skin that
results from dieting.

Oh, and I guess that eating a healthy diet with lots of omega-3's and
water is important for my skin, as is getting enough sleep and exercising
frequently. In the largest sense those are part of my beauty regimen.

For sure!

Default Beauty regimen question

I don't have much time for beauty routines, but I do wear full makeup to
work or whenever I leave the house. It doesn't take long to do and the
results are worth the effort.

I use lotion (dry climate). I color my hair myself (Audacious Red) whenever
it needs it, usually every 4-6 weeks. I buy the products at the beauty
supply. I cut my own hair, but it is very long and thick so I just trim the
ends now and then.

Whatever gives you confidence and makes you feel good (pampered), do it.

I have a question, though, since we're on the beauty subject. Suddenly, my
fingernails are breaking off at an alarming rate. I don't think I've ever
had this problem before. They are now almost down to the quick. I don't
understand what's going on. Anyone have a solution for this? I'm wondering
if I'm not getting enough nutrients because of my lo-cal diet...

I don't have any useful answer for you, but thought I'd note that my
nails are as hard as rocks and always have been, pre and post diet.
Conversely, my mother's have always broken easily. I remember that
she used to drink gelatin for this -- don't know why.

There may be some nutritional component to this, but I doubt it's just
low calories causing it. Are you getting plenty of calcium? I know
that helps make bones strong; maybe it affects nails too.

how many beauty regimens I've built up over the years. I'd like to cut
some if they're useless and I sometimes think I ought to wear
makeup and/or contacts. Do you do these things? Do you do more?

1.) Pluck & trim eyebrows (had them shaped with electrolysis once)

I have blonde hair, so I just let my eyebrows go wild since you can't really
see them...

2.) Bleach brunette facial hair (and pluck occasional beard hairs)

I think I'd just pluck, I have an occasional chin hair that keeps coming
back. Bleaching sounds like it'd be hard on the skin, but I have sensitive
skin

3.) Have hair cut & color & foiled every 6 weeks (this is a BIG expense)

I get my hair cut about every 3 months. Do you have gray hair? You could
just learn to color at home, with that semi permanent stuff. You might want
to look into a hairstyle that doesn't require so much maintenance...

4.) Shave pits every day, below knee 2x week and above knee occasionally

I shave my pits weekly, and I only shave my legs when it's warm enough to
wear shorts (at least when I'm SINGLE). Again, blonde hair, and fine, so
it's not that bad when its long.

5.) Pumice callouses on feet, keep toenails cut & polished

Nope, not me. I like my callouses, and I just chew off my toenails...

6.) Use cuticle remover on cuticles and orange sticks and buff fingernails

again, teeth do a great manicure job if your not picky! Seriously, I wear
my nails short, and under stress they're the first thing to go!

7.) Use wart remover patches for rare wart here or there (not genital!)

If it's not visible, why bother?

8.) Brush teeth 2x day with whitening toothpaste, floss daily

Oh yes - definitely. Sometimes even more often. I have an oral hygiene
obsession. I keep a toothbrush, paste, mouthwash and floss at work...

9.) Put whitening peroxide solution on teeth at night.

Yes. I have the trays and I sleep with them in, about 1-2 times per month.

10.) Treat chapped lips (mostly from peroxide) with lip balm

I chew on my lips and the inside of my mouth when I'm nervous or stressed,
so I have lip balm on my keychain...

11.) Wash face 2x daily with face soap

me too.

12.) Use face lotion with sunscreen and body lotions as needed

occassionally as needed.

13.) I will occasionally, in the winter, go for tanning sessions.

With my fair skin, I've pretty much given up on maintaining a tan - too
costly healthwise in the long run

The things I don't do (or do only very rarely):
1.) Wear eye makeup of any kind (my eyes get red & irritated easily)

I wear mascara and eye liner during work days that I get up more than 30
minutes before I have to leave the house...

2.) Wear perfume (it seems like everyone is sensitive to chemicals lately)

only if I don't have time to shower. Just kidding! I wear it when the
fancy strikes me...

3.) Wear blush (I have good skin tone without it)

never.

4.) Wear lipstick (I do occasionally, but it always makes my lips chapped)

when I feel like it. It generally doesn't make it past the first cup of
coffee if I do.

5.) Curl eyelashes (I possess such a tool but don't use it)

Only when I'm going somewheres fancy

6.) Wear cold cream or some sort of night cream on my face

Yuck! My grandma used to.
7.) I don't usually have a manicure.

uh, does gnarring on fingers with front teeth count?

8.) Wear contacts instead of glasses (I used to but allergies irritated my
eyes so much that the contacts were uncomfortable and I just stopped
wearing them.)

I hate my glasses, but hate contacts more. Going to get laser surgery next
spring...

9.) I don't do anything with my hair besides wash it and occasionally
use conditioner. I've got a short curly cut and I don't even comb it, I
just run my fingers through it. No gels, no dryer, nothing whatsoever.

Oh, I go through the rigors of blowing, curling etc M-F.

Am I missing something important that everyone else does?

Does anyone believe this whitening polish works? I've found that the
peroxide gives me chapped lips and the lip balm makes my chin break out,
so all in all my teeth might be whiter but my mouth and face now look
awful so who can tell?

I don't know about the OTC products, but the stuff I get from my dentist is
magic. I have amazingly pearly white teeth, and they were definitely
showing the effects of caffeine before...

I don't work directly with the public face to face. I am an office
manager/dispatcher for a plumbing company, so it's more important that I
sound fresh and happy on the phone. If I forego all that "gussy up" crap
for 30 extra minutes of sleep to achieve that, so be it. I'm more
interested these days in getting enough sleep, eating right and often
enough, and lifting big heavy weights...

Just a cut every 6, no color

5.) Pumice callouses on feet, keep toenails cut & polished

weekly, no polish

6.) Use cuticle remover on cuticles and orange sticks and buff fingernails

never

7.) Use wart remover patches for rare wart here or there (not genital!)

never had one

8.) Brush teeth 2x day with whitening toothpaste, floss daily

yes

9.) Put whitening peroxide solution on teeth at night.

no

10.) Treat chapped lips (mostly from peroxide) with lip balm

nightly before bed

11.) Wash face 2x daily with face soap

only when I wear makeup - otherwise just in the shower

12.) Use face lotion with sunscreen and body lotions as needed

yes - face lotion on the face and Palmer's cocoa butter everywhere else

13.) I will occasionally, in the winter, go for tanning sessions.

never

The things I don't do (or do only very rarely):
1.) Wear eye makeup of any kind (my eyes get red & irritated easily)

mascara and concealer only

2.) Wear perfume (it seems like everyone is sensitive to chemicals lately)

lightly applied body spray

3.) Wear blush (I have good skin tone without it)

occasionally style

Am I missing something important that everyone else does?

I do a sea salt scrub weekly when I do my feet, it feels great & exfoliates
the arms and legs nicely
I also use an occasional face mask or biore strips

Does anyone believe this whitening polish works? I've found that the
peroxide gives me chapped lips and the lip balm makes my chin break out,
so all in all my teeth might be whiter but my mouth and face now look
awful so who can tell?

I didn't find much difference when using them. I found brushing w/ whitening
toothpaste 2-3X a day was sufficient.

Is it expensive? The two week supply of the OTC stuff is around $15 and
I'm not delighted with either the effect or the side-effect.

What's "in" and "out" in that arena? I'm not a slave to fashion, but I'd like

My advice is to go to a department store with a makeup counter and get a
makeover. You need to buy all new eye makeup every six months or so,
anyway because stuff starts to grow in it. (I get eye infections really
easily for some reason.)

The last time I did this (in April) I brought my daughter along and we had
a nice "girls out" time. It was especially pleasant because I've also got
two sons and they demand much more from me than my daughter does so it was
a rare frivolity.

Oh yeah -- I do this sometimes too. It does feel good :-).

I do face masks occasionally -- not very often. I bought some Biore
strips but haven't tried them.
