I didnt quite understand what free weights were but I guess I will
find out. I dont quite get how building up my quads with free
weights helps the knee. Isnt it going to kill me using the knee?

Free weights are dumbells. Real light ones to start with. Weight
training is brilliant because it builds muscle, which needs more
energy than fat, so it helps you lose weight and get fit. You're not
going to look like Arnold Schwartzeneger - women don't have the
testosterone - but if you stick to it long enough, you'll get a
really nice shape to your body. I really like having muscles instead
of fat now, even though there's still a long way to go!

Actually, most men won't look like Arnold either. He is the product of good
genetics (extremely good), plenty of time to do nothing by train, and drugs.

The idea of your PT is that he ought to know enough to start you
very, very slowly and take everything only at the pace you can
manage. You don't need to raise your heart rate doing weight
training, or work up a sweat, at the beginning - the idea is that
your muscles are tired but not sore at the end of a session, then you
skip a day to give them time to recover before you train the same
muscles again.

You can train your quads without putting strain on your knee - and
once your quads are stronger, your knee will be stronger too. And all
the time you'll be losing weight. Total win-win - so long as you take
it very easy, and don't do more than you can manage.

Hams are just as important as quads in having strong knees. In fact, an
imbalance in quad/ham development/strength can bring on knee problems.

The overall idea that you're pushing is sound, however.

Thank you for the information Nicky. I admit I'm ignorant when it
comes weight training. Now tell me this... I'm going in for an hour
session 3 times a week on MWF it is $75 a week. Is that reasonable? I
called Fitness West and they charge $50 a session so $150 a week. I
thought that was astronomical but then again what do I know??
Thanks again, Laureen

If you find a good trainer, a week or two might be fine (at $75). They can
mainly show you around, give you a basic routine, and coach you on form.
There is no need to reply on any PT for longer than a little while, though,
as this stuff is not rock science. Read Krista's website and other
resourses and you'll be good to go.

It just doesn't make sense for an intelligent person, with access to good
info, to spend more than a little time at the beginning with a PT. IMO and
all that.

Well, waaaay before I started weight training, the quack had me flexing the
muscle at the front top of the knee several times a day. In the same way
you're supposed to do 50 pelvic squeezes, he wanted me to do 50 quad flexes
every time I thought about it! After a couple of months of doing this (no
weight loss or other increase in exercise), the feeling I had that my knee
was going to bend backwards and break, or dislocate, or other extremely
unwanted thing - just went away. I suspect persuading a quack to refer you
to a physio for a more targetted routine might do the same job a lot
quicker.

Then I discovered diabetes, and learned that weight training was a Damn Good
Idea, and started reading sites like sumptous.com, or Kathy Smith's books,
as something other than fiction; and learnt that, from being someone who
couldn't drive more than half an hour because of knee pain, I can now do
several kinds of squats without a twinge. I found towel squats the easiest -
wrap a towel around the bannisters, hold on to the ends like mad, and
pretend you're sitting down. Get your thighs horizontal, stand up, repeat
until you're feeling tired; try again in a couple of days. Dead good for bg
levels, plus ongoing weight loss and your leg muscles!

Funny you say that Roger. m not thinkning long term basis. I just need
an informed jump start. I'm going to utilize him until my 3 month
period is up in mid May. I'm hoping by then I will know what I am doing
and will have dropped enough weight to walk far again. I can only seem
to do a half mile right now

You could give her 10% of the money you make from it every time you
post a Happy Dance. Even 20% if you're generous.

After all, 10% of nothing is not going to break the bank.

So true! In fact, I'll give her 50% 'cause that's just the kind of
girl I am.
