Default Sunflower Seeds

The Nutrition Facts on Sunflower seeds says:
Serving Size 1 oz
Calories 170
Total Fat 15 g
Cholest. 0 mg
Sodium 275 mg
Total Carb 5 g
Fiber 5 g
Sugars 1 g
Protein 6 g

Ingredients: Sunflower Kernels, Peanut Oil, Salt.
So .. does that really mean the effective carbs is 0? It seems a little to
good to be true.
Thanks,
~Kat

The infamous fiber-already-subtracted label.

Thank you

Fiber is a kind of carb. So are sugars and starches. The regulations for
labeling are different in different countries and even with regulations, many
labels differ. There is no way you can tell absolutely - but the one you
supplied is a dead giveaway.
If there are 5g of carb including 5g of fiber and 1g of sugar, then - as the
other poster replied - you have a negative carbs figure when you subtract the
fiber.

Use websites, books, etc. to get comfortable with the general carb contents of
things - then check each label out for sanity. Remember that with the lo carb
diet getting more popular, more and more companies will be listing net carbs
(less fiber) in order to get your business.

Kat,

There are something like 4 grams of carbs in a pack of Lay's unshelled
sunflower seeds, which makes them a reasonable snack, especially since it
can take a long time to eat the whole pack and 1/2 makes a nice serving.

The only problem I've run into with the seeds is that there's more salt on
them than the nutritional info would suggest so if I eat them I am always
heavier the next day. But it's just water retained from the salt.

The other problem is that they can be habit forming and if you eat a lot of
them, and are close to goal, the calories can start adding up.

But they make a great food for when you feel like you just have to nibble on
something and don't want to blow the diet.

Not so, because all the numbers are rounded.

Consider these unrounded numbers:

Unrounded Rounded

Fiber 4.7 5
Sugar 0.7 1
Carbs 5.4 5

So, the rounded numbers can be correct even though they seem
impossible.

At least there are numbers there; when I was young, they weren't.
