I just did a side-by-side tasting of Breyer's Low-Carb Vanilla and
their French Vanilla. There was a noticeable difference, but nowhere
near as much as I expected. The mouthfeel at first was very similar,
but the melting characteristics are different. Interestingly, the
low-carb version takes longer to melt and stays in the mouth longer.
There are several gums used in it, and they conspire to hold it
together longer. And they provide fiber.

Mmmm. Good approach. I didn't do a side-by-side. But now that you remind
me of it, you're right...it did seem to "stay" longer in the mouth. Drat!
And here I thought it wuz just enjoyment after being without so long...(:-)!

I tried the Breyers LC chocolate, and found it very acceptable. Not as
rich and creamy and flavorful as SF Blue Bunny, but not icy/grainy and
flavorless like the LeCarb. It seems very light, thought, as if whipped
before freezing.

It's already in WalMart, at least at the new one Georgetown. I expect
it would be in the Round Rock one. It only came in within the last
two weeks or so.

The mouthfeel of the two I tried (vanilla and chocolate) wasn't very
creamy -- more like frozen whipped cream, or slightly crystallized ice
cream.

I didn't like it that much. Aside from the texture, the flavor is
pretty weak. I can see where it would appeal to people who are doing
strict Atkins (which I'm not, just watching carbs to control blood
sugar), but I prefer the SF Blue Bunny by far.

I loved it. The flavor is good and it is creamy. I also tried LC Klondike
bars tonight. Net 5 carbs. Yummy!!!

I tried the Chocolate and liked it well enough. It was a decent
chocolate flavor - not wonderful, but good enough that I went back to
buy another half gallon this week. The local Smith's was all out of
it in one week - now I'll be hunting the grocery store shelves....
Has anyone found it at Walmart yet?

All commercial ice creams have a very specific amount of air
incorporated into them. This is called the "loft" or "rise" and is
necessary to avoid a greasy mouthfeel. Too much and it feels to light.

Homemade ice creams have the air incorporated by the dashers in the
various kinds of makers, too.

Yes. It is somewhat weaker than the French vanilla.

The textures you reported seem to me to be similar to
an ice cream that's been improperly handled. Perhaps thawed & refrozen?
Left too long in a "frost-free" freezer? Poor production quality on

that
batch? Hard to say...

I bought the LC ice cream to test. My slender 12-year-old daughter
bought the FV. I tasted the LC as soon as we arrived home. It felt
fake then. Almost foamy. Very soft and light on flavor. It was
disappointing. Obviously, the transport time and raised temperature
didn't do well by it.

After a couple days in the freezer, I tried it again. Firm, solid.
Flavor seemed somehow to have intensified; can't explain it.

Today, it was fine. Compares very favorably with their top-of-the-line
French Vanilla. Stood up well in side-by-side tasting.

Pastorio

Later all,
Dusty

Tried the strawberry and vanilla tonight. Not a single strawberry chunk
in it and did not like the texture very much either. The vanilla was
much better but why are the calories so high 130 calories per half cup.
I was hoping for more like 80 or 90 calories per half cup.

Hey! I'll hang my post here on the post Chris Taylor Jr sent:

http://www.icecreamusa.com/products/...rt&pageCount=1

Web site shows three flavors.

Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry
all are 1/2 cup: 10g carb - 3g fiber - 3g sugar alcohol = 4g ??
