Default WonderBread loses, we win.

Wonder Bread filed for bankruptcy today.
That really makes me happy.

Because about a year ago, I remember someone from management there
saying that they would NEVER modify their high-carb breads.

Pretty selfish way of looking at things, don't you think? Just because you
are on LC you feel all high carb companies should be bankrupt. Hence more
and more people losing their jobs. Many people can eat all carbs with no
ill effects. My grandfather lived to 92 eating a danish and coffee and
sugar for every breakfast.

I bet it makes the people that work for them really happy too. It will
probably make for a great holiday season and a prospersous new year,
what with being unemployed and all. Geez.

I can't see why it should make you happy. Nobody was forcing you to
eat it.

Awww, poor Wonder Bread.

Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the bread slicing machine in 1912.
When told that presliced bread would not sell, because it rapidly
become stale, he tried a number of things (including pinning the
slices together) until he came up with a machine that sliced and
wrapped loaves of bread in 1928. Wonder Bread was the first company
to popularize sliced bread from his invention in 1930, from whence
the saying, "the greatest thing since sliced bread."

In addition to it being very soft and smooth, and pre-sliced, I
suspect a good chunk of Wonder's popularity came about from a notion
of the past few hundred years that dark bread was the bread of the
lower-class, and the lighter the bread, the more upper-class it was.
(Ergotism, while a strong possibility for earlier European witch
trial cases, was largely dismissed as a hypothesis for the later
Salem witch trials because rye bread wasn't considered fit for
"proper" people in New England at that time.)

Even without the low-carb diet gaining popularity, Wonder's sales had
probably already been suffering from the increasing focus on whole
grains and fiber, and the increasing perception of white bread as
nutritionally null, despite fortification.

Same company also makes Twinkies. I love good bread but never included
stuff like Wonder bread in that category.

I have now found the news item. They are continuing to operate, while in
chapter 11. Thanks for posting this. I had missed it in the news.

It symbolizes a change. While the strict low carbs diets practiced in this
group are a fad, there may be a permanent reduction in the overall
population's carb eating.

The highly refined white bread WB makes is their special niche. IMHO they
should make the same product, but scale down production to the new level.
If they change to some other kind of bread, "Wonder Bread" won't mean
anything.

I used to always buy Wonder Bread "Big" loaves.
