While channel surfing I recently came across yet another infomercial by
ex-con (check forgery, I believe) Kevin Trudeau (he began his tv
infomerical
career selling a memory system). The new infomercial deals with his new
book
about cures which the government (he's had run-ins with the US
Government's
Food and Drug Administration) is supposedly keeping from the American
people.
Normally I wouldn't give Trudeau two seconds of my time but in his new
infomerical he mentioned something which intrigues me and which I've heard
alleged by others: namely, that US food growers and manufacturers are
adding
(knowingly, I assume) substances in their products which themselves may
largely
account for the upsurge in serious obesity in the USA. Unfortunately

There can be 2% undisclosed ingredients in commercially prepared foods.
That is why many diabetics do not use such items as bottled fruit
juices.

So why is HFCS added to cereals? Does it affect the taste?

LinJiah asked:

Because it is cheaper than more traditional forms of sugar.

Does it affect the taste?

Sure. It's refined sugar. Humans like sweet foods. It is
instinctive. In the world before farming and selective breeding,
even the sweetest of ripe fruits were what would now be
considered quite tart and not sweet, but even slight sweetness
was a sign that fruit was ready to digest. With selective
breeding, refinement and so on, the human instinctive
desire for sweetness is now abused and used against us.

HFCS is supposed to cause problems worse than other types of
sugar. Does it? I dunno. Because it's cheaper than other forms
of sugar *more* of it is used. Heck, I bet *more* cane sugar
would cause problems worse, too.

The foods that sell best taste best. The advertisements are aimed at
processed foods that contain high fructose corn syrup and msg.

Types types than just MSG. Since MSG got a bad name, some
people try to avoid it. Problem is there is entire class of glumamates
other than the mono-sodium type and the other ones are allowed the
name "natural flavoring". He at least partially means glutamates
and they do cause addiction-like reactions in some people. That
and they make food taste better just like MSG.
