So how nasty is the Atkins Bread?
Howdy;
I have not used the boxed bread mixes so can't say about them. I did make a "loaf" (length 8", width 4" height 3") of bread from the Atkins bake mix and it was...... HORRIBLE!!! After eating half a slice it went into the trash. Now the muffin mixes (Quick Quisine) are a different story.....those I really like! So how nasty is the Atkins Bread?
Howdy;
I will be visiting the Wal Mart superstore (Pima and Frank Lloyd Wright in Scottsdale) and let you know if they carry it. It also may be in the refrigerated section. Regards Dan Carefree, AZ "Jake" wrote in message ... POOPY. I've checked EVERY loaf of bread at my local Wally World (in Phoenix) and not a one low carb. Ah, the indignity of it all. Jake. So how nasty is the Atkins Bread?
Pretty nasty but not as nasty as the Atkins Bake Mix recipe (blech!).
Nature's Own low carb bread is good but if you can't find it, check out the store brand light/lite bread. Many types of bread have only 6 or 7 grams of carb per slice AND they are edible, some are even rather good. I hate Atkin's bread or any of the other expensive low carb kinds I've tried except O'Solo buns (health food store) which aren't great but they aren't horrible either, just pricey. So how nasty is the Atkins Bread?
One thing I'm curious about : If Atkins breaks your addiction to
carbs... or proves that food cravings are the result of unstable blood sugar... why would you want "fake" bread or chocolate in the first place ? - - In Korea, most people find it impossible to eat a meal without kimchee, in Japan a meal for most people is unthinkable without rice... and in the West a piece of Bread... but this is all behaviourally patterned stuff... So what I wonder is why pay TOP dollar for a piece of fake bread, when for the same price you could probably get some "real" food ? A meal without bread is just as thinkable to me as a meal without Kimchee and Rice to most people on this list... Just curious... Eddie |

Some people are not eating low carb to break addictions or control food cravings, they are eating low carb because it is a wholesome way of eating, contributes to cardiovascular health, improves skin condition, boosts energy levels, etc. For these people, enjoying a couple slices of low carb bread occasionally is perfectly reasonable. For people who feel there is an addiction issue with bread, this may not be the best choice. HTH-J |

.net I did make a "loaf" (length 8", width 4" height 3") of bread from the Atkins bake mix and it was...... HORRIBLE!!! I completely agree! It had the texture and taste of compressed sawdust. Even slathered with butter it was ridiculously dry. At 3g carbs per chunk, it is the most pathetic excuse for bread I've seen yet. If you look hard enough, you can usually find low-ish carb breads right in your own supermarket. Look for Nature's Own brand at Wal Mart, or scour your bread section. I found a local brand (Rochester, NY) in my supermarket that has a net carb count of 9g per slice. A couple pieces of this fits into my carb allotment with no problem. HTH-J |

So how nasty is the Atkins Bread?
"Eddie" One thing I'm curious about : If Atkins breaks your addiction to carbs... or proves that food cravings are the result of unstable blood sugar... why would you want "fake" bread or chocolate in the first place ? I'm diabetic. Too many carbs from white bread, rice, potatoes, screws up my blood sugar. I do eat bread, not fake but a lower carbohydrate type that doesn't spike my blood sugar. I eat chocolate (in moderation) that is not sweetened with sugar (the real culprit, not the chocolate). My former cravings were the result of unstable blood sugar which is exactly why I have to limit bread and sweetened chocolate! The benefit of a low carb diet for me has been not only to lose some weight, after being on an incorrect diet (from doctor by nutritionist, old exchange diet!) for years. I now have cut the number of insulin shots from 5 down to 1 or 2 a day. My blood sugar is in the normal range and my eyesight has cleared up. Added benefit has been my cholesterol is lower and after having a heart attack a few years ago my cholesterol is down to 145 (down from almost 300!).I do expect to live a longer healthier life as long as I can keep my carbs down and my sugar in check. I now expect to see my 3 year old daughter grow up, maybe even see my grandchildren. At one point I wasn't sure this was going to happen. We all have different reasons to low carb but this is mine. Does that help? Nancy J |

For these people, enjoying a couple slices of low carb bread
occasionally is perfectly reasonable. I'd agree with that, no doubt... but it reminds me of my Orthodox Jewish upbringing and this company that used to make KOSHER fake CRAB and KOSHER fake Bacon... and to me... it always seemed a bit strange... I mean, I could see some bearded Hasidic Rabbi going nuts and one day saying, "Man if I can't find a good fake Pork Chop I'm dropping this whole schtick..." and one day... voila... his prayers are answered. But my thing is... in most cases fake food doesn't taste like the real thing... but if someone were to say, "Here's a piece of low carb bread that doesn't taste like cardboard... and here's a piece of low carb chocolate that won't make your pants look like a horror movie if you can't get to the bathroom in time and tastes *as good as* real chocalate..." then I'd definitely give it a shot if it was good tasting but healthy food... (The worst food I ever ate in life, incidentally, was on a "low fat" diet and that fake no-fat soy cheese as well as fake low fat cream cheese... my word... I'd really like to force the person who came up with that garbage to actually have to eat it... that would be the worst fate I could wish on anyone... Ed eddielandsberg.com |

I'm diabetic. Too many carbs from white bread, rice, potatoes, screws up my blood sugar. I do eat bread, not fake but a lower carbohydrate type Hi Nancy, This has been my experience too... I was type II diabetic prior to Atkins and morbidly overweight. The question I raise is that if "fake" bread and chocolate are so nasty tasting, why people *have* to have them, when there are other lo carb "real" foods available... and my theory is its a "I have to have it..." psychology... If I had a choice between eating 1. the real thing and having my blood sugar shoot up the wall, 2. a fake version, much healthier but that tastes like cardboard or gives me the G.I.s or 3. not eating it at all and finding some other healthy but great tasting food... mine would be choice 3... but if choice 4 is available (lo carb, tastes great) of course I'd love to try it. I have to try everything at least once but I don't go back for seconds on the nasty tasting stuff. Frankly I wonder is low carbing kills tastebuds in some people because of the stuff they are willing to eat and actually seem to enjoy. Different strokes for different folks If I had a choice between eating 1. the real thing and having my blood sugar shoot up the wall, 2. a fake version, much healthier but that tastes like cardboard or gives me the G.I.s or 3. not eating it at all and finding some other healthy but great tasting food... mine would be choice 3... but if choice 4 is available (lo carb, tastes great) of course I'd love to try it. I agree with you but I look for option 4 before I give it up completely. I'm a good cook and will attempt anything in the kitchen, LOL! Nancy 209/167/145 |
