You're right. It's silly. I have broad shoulders and wide hips and
can carry more weight than most without it looking too bad. In fact,
almost noone ever guesses my weight; consistently guessing about
10-20lbs low. Also, despite having large hands (I can palm a
basketball at 5'11") I have very small wrists. So as you say,
everyone's body is completely different and these ratios simply
don't work.

Everybody has small wrists. I've never seen a person with big wrists
except for obese people who store fat around their wrists. But that
has nothing to do with being big boned. It's kind of silly to say
"everyone's body is completely different."

Well, people's bodies ARE different. I mean, there are different body
types. Um -- I will use celebrities to illustrate my point. Jennifer Lopez
has a very different body type from, say, Charlize Theron. For all I know
they both weigh the same, but their bodies look completely different.

Yes, but that doesn't say anything about whether either one of them is big-boned
or small-boned, and it doesn't say anything about predictability of bone size
ratios based on measuring wrist diameters.

Marilyn Monroe's body type was very different from Twiggy's -- you get my
picture? Neither one could diet enough or exercise enough or do anything
enough to look like the other. So -- my question originally was, how do you
know what weight is healthy for your body type? What is the magic number?
This thread (and thanks to all who contributed!) has kind of made me realize
those charts are unreliable. I think I will just go with what feels and
looks good to me -- that's unreliable, too, but what's a girl to do?

I think you should go by what *works* good, rather than what *looks* good. Your
weight is healthy if you can live an active life comfortably. What is an active
life depends on what you want to do in your life, but it will always involve
some active exercise. If what you want to do is hiking in the mountains, then
your weight is healthy if you can comfortably hike ten miles into the mountains
every week. If you like tennis, then if you can play several matches of tennis
per week, your weight is healthy. If your cholesterol and blood sugar are messed
up, your weight is probably not healthy. If you can't climb five flights of
stairs without huffing and puffing, your weight is probably not healthy.

go by how your clothes fit you.

I agree with your first statement, but the last? You can
obviously get bigger and bigger clothes, so that doesn't wash.

I think the point was that everybody knows that everybody's body is
different, so it's silly to mention it; Doesn't change that the majority
of people's bodies fit into the general model, where wrist (or neck)
perimeter shows the general build of the person.

This is not true. Otherwise, there would be no point in comparing wrist,
fist, etc, measurements of fighters who are the same height and weight.
People are not build the same in terms of proportions. My little brother is
5 inches shorter than me and yet his wrists are the same size as mine
despite me having much larger hands..

I used to have very slim ankles. After years of spraining them over and over
and over again they're kinda lumpy and puffy all the time now, and ache when
it's a southerly. They still look ridiculously skinny for the size of the
rest of me though.

Appreciate your strong ankles, I bet they don't let you down (let you down
.... more like throw me down in a screaming heap!) with monotonous regularity
like mine do ...

they do the test there because it's the least likely area to be covered
in fat .. even during bloating the ankles get swollen . I get a bit
around my wrists but not enough .. it's the "best" form of eyeballing
without xrays or whatever way they do it

the key you can use for "rough" estimate

middle finger and thumb around wrist

fingers overlap - small frame
fingers meet - medium frame
fingers don't touch - large frame

again rough estimate YMMV

Interesting. By this measurement, I'm somewhere between "medium frame" and
"large frame" (I can get them to touch, depending on which wrist is used
for the measurement and where I measure.)

My fingers overlap. However, as I said, my upper body is pretty small. I
still have that thick lower frame. I don't match.

You know, I NEVER thought about it that way -- but I guess it's true. I can
ice skate and roller skate and do all kinds of things that my little-ankled
friends don't do as well. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I'm like you in the respect that people never can guess my weight
accurately, or my height. I'm shorter than they guess and when I tell
them my weight they are actually shocked. Most say I would have guessed
you at 130 lb and 5'6" .. as if ..

more like 5'2" and 157 - still it's nice that people don't see me as I
really am ... or is it??
