Is this the group for me?
I just got out of a 3 week stay in the hospital and things have to
change. I am diabetic, high blood pressure, obese and while I was in the hospital I had congestive heart failure and kidney shut down. I need to follow a program of low carb, low sodium and about a 1500 calorie limit. Is anyone here on a program similar to this or can anyone give me some tips. I know Im going to have to start cooking more instead of relying on canned and frozen goods and meals like I have been. Thanks Carol in WV |

Welcome!!
I think that Susan wrote exactly the right things, but let me add a few points: - Low carbohydrate style diets are not only about losing some weight. You will see that so many illnesses/conditions can be traced back to incorrect diet and exercise habits. The main problem for me was IBD. - I am sure that people will respond to your posts, but please do return the favours and share the insight that you gain with other posters to the group. - Only you are responsible for your state. Blaming commercials, your friends or the mainstream habits will not be of help. You get the health that you create. Good luck on your path. |

Jim wrote in message ... Low carb and low sodium is tougher. A great number of low sodium foods like salad dressings are no longer around. I haven't seen a "low sodium" section of a food store or health food store in years. True, but it's really easy to make your own salad dressing. Cheri |

"Cheri" gserviceatinreachdotcom say'd I need to follow a program of low carb, low sodium and about a 1500 calorie limit. Is anyone here on a program similar to this or can anyone give me some tips. Hi Cheri, Many people find that once they start an established, recognized low-carb diet plan like Atkins or Protein Power, that the weight drops *reasonably* fast (especially at first), and that their hunger limits itself to healthful levels. That happened for me and I know others will say the same. In other words, it may not be necessary for you to count calories. I know you're anxous to get started. I suggest you back-off for a day or two, get a good book and read the book. The time is now for you to choose a healthy eating and lifestyle -- that's what I hear you saying. Do a little study, get this stuff figured out, make a plan and then go for it. Changing your life and losing weight isn't an overnight deal. On another note, 1500 calories doesn't sound like a hell of a lot for a person who weighs 300 pounds. Even if you're sedentary, you probably burn twice that in a day sitting on the couch. (Absolutely no offense intended.) There are many people here much more knowledgeable than me when it comes to this kind of thing, and I hope somebody will address this issue. I think that eating sucha a small amount of food, based on your current stature, may be both unhelthful and virtually impossible to maintain. I'm really glad you found this group, by the way :-) Over the past several months, the folks who post here have really helped me a lot. (Thanks everyone!) I'm sure they'll do the same for you -- they're those kinds of folks. Mike |

Cheri, I am looking forward to hearing one of your low-carb salad dressing recipies. Can you get one to me over the next few days so that I can prepare it for thanksgiving? Mike |

One I've been enjoying lately: mix 1/4 cup Greek yogurt, 1 minced shallot, 2 TB olive oil and 1 TB lime juice. While it's intended as a salad dressing, I've been liking it as a tartar-sauce replacement for scallops also. -- http://www.ornery-geeks.org/consulting/ |

When I started out at 380 lbs., I was losing easily on 3000 cal/day. Of course after the first few weeks I couldn't eat that much and naturally dropped down to 2000 and less most days, losing the first 54 lbs in 90 days. And I am fairly sedentary, even my work is done mostly standing in one place. -- Sherry lowcarb.owly.net |
