"Atkin's diet causing higher prices"
Todays Arizona Republic newspaper has a large headline on the business
section which says, "High beef prices pound buyers". The second line states, "Import ban, diet fads linked to costs". Within the article it says, "A ban on Canadian beef imports since May and the surging popularity of red meat fueled partly by the low-carb Atkins diet, have combined to drive wholesale beef prices to record levels". It sort of reminds me of the phony gasoline shortages. When the big guys want to exploit a circumstance, they have the wheelbase to do it! George |

"Atkin's diet causing higher prices"
wow! When I bought my 15 pound Turkey for Thanksgiving (Canadian TG is in
October), I paid a whopping 28 dollars CDN for it. Maybe I'd better start going back across the border to buy my meat. On the other hand, the last beef roast I bought was approx. 4.00 a pound. TJ |

LC or not, I'll not be having "baked goods" again, at least the kind with flour and sugar in them. My body just can't stand it. All the whining from companies who sell stuff my body can't stand won't change a freakin' thing :-) cm |

George Canada usually supplies 10% or more of the beef in the US. Since an american-sourced cow was found with BSE in Canada, the US has shut the door on Canadian beef. Prices in Canada have plummetted. I've purchased half a beef carcass, cut, wrapped and frozen for $2.00 a pound, and that is Canadian funds. Dubya isn't in a hurry to open the borders to Canadian beef anytime soon, as long as his texas beef ranchers are raking in the dough from the inflated beef prices. Politics as usual in the US. The most pro-free-enterprise country in the world has the most protectionist policies in the world. TC |

This is the first time I have heard this. The cow was eight years old. It was owned by someone who immigrated to Canada from the USA two (three?) years ago. There have been efforts to find the ancestry of the cow. Herds in BC, Alberta & Sask have been slaughtered. The ancestry trail keeps leading back to the border, but stalls there, so more herds are slaughtered. No other mad cow disease has been found - not even in the chickens taken from someone near here.
