Hi Jenny,

That said, the problem with prednisone is that really messes up your insulin
and blood sugar. It can also push marginal beta cells over the edge and
permanently screw up your blood sugar. For most people, blood sugar will
return to normal after the prednisone is out of the system, but it's worth
keeping an eye on your blood sugar afterwards because for a few of us, it
doesn't. I am pretty sure that it was a course of prednisone that pushed me
from being hypoglycemic to being a full-fledged diabetic. People with
diabetes who take prednisone can see their control permanently worsen.

Why is prednisone used then? Wouldn't cortisol also work, and be less
toxic?

Curt,

I only took prednisone for 9 days and it screwed up my blood sugar
permanently. If you don't bounce back when the drug is finished, get yours
checked.

Thanks Jenny. Being that I am only on it for 9 days, I am not worried

about
all that. I already feel a little better and am down 1/3rd of my

beginning
doses.

Curt,

it can take five months to clear up!

Well my eye was almost swollen shut and I ended up seeing my doctor.

He
stated that it is in my system and my body will most likely have the

rashes
pop up all over the place. I can't remember the term used. Anyway he

put
me on Prednisone (steroid) for 9 days. This is day three and he was

right,
the rashes just keep popping up everywhere. I put everything I own in

the
way and even washed inside my car. My dog was bathed just to make

sure
I
didn't pet him with the damn oil from the ivy.

I don't like taking this drug. I am way too awake (jittery) and have
trouble sleeping without having a few drinks. I am hungry all the

time
and
it isn't just some little huger spell. I am HUNGRY!

The rashes are all over me, but my face finally is not as swollen.

Now to make this on topic.... I am off the diet for a few days. I

just
don't care and really don't want to deal with the hunger. It is only

a
few
days and not the end of the world. I will be back on track when it is

over.
I am not eating sweets due to how awake I am at least.

Take care,
Curt

Mogget,

Prednisone is a form of cortisol/cortisone. .

Naturally high cortisol levels are associated with the development of
diabetes, too.

These drugs are used because there are times when nothing else will shut
down a runaway autoinflammatory reaction and hence the risk is warranted.
However, I think doctors are much too fast to prescribe it and use it in
situations where it really isn't such a good idea.

That said, systemic poison ivy probably is a case where it's use is
appropriate. No child should have to go through what my son did when he had
the untreated systemic reaction to the poison ivy (or perhaps poison oak. We
never were sure which plant it was, only that it was a plant.)

BTW, I forgot to mention in the earlier message that when you are taking the
prednisone you have to be very vigilant with any cuts because the prednisone
turns off the immune system and infections can very easily take root. Hit
any broken skin with antibiotic ointment!

Jenny, I don't know if I had my blood sugar tested before. I don't think I
have any problems in that area. My whole weight problems are all binge
related and mental crap. Thanks for looking out for me though. I will see
if I feel any different or whatever it is I should be looking for.

You have my sympathy. I took prednisone for 3 days to see if it would
help my colitis. It was like I was on speed--was wired something
awful. Thank God, I only had to take it for a few days. I feel sorry
for anyone who must take it longer. Hang in there.
