One of the regular events at the annual picnic is "How to torture a
Twinkie". They've fried them, topped them with several different
toppings and this year it was Vegemite a club member brought home with
her from a recent trip. GAWD...that stuff looked like axle grease. I
imagine the axle grease would taste better. Do they really eat this
stuff?

I always thought a Twinkie was a chocolate bar, like a Mars Bar (which,
in Glasgow, is often deep fried).

Anyway, delicious foods jonny foreigner won't eat:
Black pudding, white pudding (only brits and Irish enjoy these)
Kidneys (although them do smell before they're cooked)
Tripe
Haggis

All of the above are amongst the most tasty foods I've ever enjoyed.
Although I don't think I could bring myself to eat thousand year eggs,
many Chinese people are revolted by the notion of blue cheeses.

Beverly,

On a trip to Australia, we stayed overnight at "The Rex" in Canberra, NSW
("Why wait to die?") and they had packets of it at the continental
breakfast buffet but I couldn't bring myself to try it!

There's nothing wrong with vegemite. For some years we used to go to
a special (Australian) shop in London to get it in preference to
Marmite. Now vegemite is sold everywhere over here, but I'm back to
preferring Marmite. Perhaps it's a case of unavailability making
something seem more attractive. Certainly Marmite is different from
when I was a kid - it's much less strong now and IMO has lost some of
its flavour.

I imagine a lot of people wouldn't like some of the delicious foods(?)
I ate as a child. Things like pickled pigs feet and cracklins. There
was a slaughter house in town and my dad often stopped to pickup some
of these items. As a kid I loved them but haven't had them in years.
I never tasted his limburger cheese as I couldn't get past the smell of
it :-)

I don't like cracklin or pork scratchings. What are trotters like to
eat? Crunchy? Do you nibble the
hooves/toenails/whatevertheyarecalledonpigs?

Oh wow. And I thought that putting my habit of putting Italian
dressing on a taco salad was an odd combination.

And eating for entertainment is something I have to be very careful about
doing. I got fat doing that. The Wendy's motto, "Do what tastes right"
is practically satanic advice to me. It's equivalent to "have sex with
anyone you fancy five times a day no matter where you are." Just because
it feels good doesn't mean it's appropriate to do. You've got to bear in
mind the consequences. You've got to act responsibly, as grown-ups must.
Cheetos are the condom-less hook-ups of "food."

I think it's not too hard to think of foods significantly worse than
Cheetos. They don't appeal to me, but singling them out as the
"comdom-less hookup" is overstating the case.

Things worse than cheetos wouldn't be what I consider "food". If it has
no nutritious value, no benefit to fueling my body other than possessing
pure calories, I don't consider it food. "Entertainment" perhaps, or in
situations involving exercising for more than two hours "calories for
fuel." But if it meets no nutritional requirements then it isn't really
appropriate to put in my mouth with any intent other than to entertain
myself (or fuel the third hour of exercise.)

Would you disagree?

I'm not against using some of my calorie budget for entertainment purposes
from time to time. But when I do, I choose really entertaining foods,
things that are WORTH the calorie cost.

Eat unrestrainedly for entertainment, mouth feel, the joy of having the
taste on my tongue, is what got me fat. I'm too aware of that now to feel
like junk food is a good habit for me. Because I don't want to be fat or
malnourished, and those are the choices for me.

Dally

I think I completely agree with you. I think I may draw the line a little
more liberally though. Food for taste and fun is okay, we are only
questioning the quantitities/frequencies.
Rachael.
