Exercise and Weightloss
Hi everyone, my apologies if this topic had been done to death!
After years of a fairly sedentary lifestyle for the past month and a half I have been excercising daily for around 45minutes and Im really enjoying it. Well I dont exactly love it while Im doing it, but I feel great after. Apart from the weightloss benefits I have noticed some other greast side effects: a slight twinge I have had in the small of my back for the last four months is GONE; I can actually clap my hands under my leg - something I couldn't do 1 1/2 months back when I started; my knees and feet dont ache while exercising; and the other day I actually jogged down the (rather long) corridor at my work and wasnt even out of breath at the end! Amazing! I guess my question is: what is the best time of day to excercise for optimum weightloss, or doesnt it matter? I usually excercise first thing in the morning, before breakfast. This seems to work OK for me, especially as we Aussies are heading in to a hot hot summer and its not so sweltering at that time of day. (Today is 37 degrees C where I am - around 98 F I think - with 39 and 36 predicted for the next 2 days - yuck!) Also, it seems to supress my appetite a bit when I excercise in the morning, and gets my day off to a good start. I mean who wants to throw all that hard work away by eating junk later in the day?! I'd love to hear other experiences. -- CaityH In Sunny Australia kgs: 114.7/108/70 lbs: 252.8/237.6/154.3 LC since 16th October 2003 |

I walked out of there (Curves, a women's only gym) feeling like I was 10 feet tall and so proud of myself for finally doing something about my weight. Anyway, to answer your question, the best time of day to exercise is whenever you know you'll do it. -- -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna |

Exercise and Weightloss
I love to exercise at 2pm. However, I actually exercise in the morning,
as I get it over with. By the way, you might want to take some days off, as exercising every day means that there's no time for the body to repair itself. The other thing to do is "cross training" -- jog one day and bike another. -- Bob M in CT remove 'x.' to reply |

Exercise and Weightloss
"CaityH" writes: I guess my question is: what is the best time of day to excercise for optimum weightloss, or doesnt it matter? If you're doing aerobic-type exercise to lose weight, the best time to exercise is when you don't have a ready supply of dietary calories to draw from and don't have much insulin in your bloodstream to block the release of fat from fat cells. In general, this means first thing in the morning for most folks, but your schedule may dictate otherwise. If you're doing strength-type exercise, the best time is when you DO have a ready supply of calories (specifically, proteins and carbs, but most folks have a post-workout drink to supply these) to draw from, so you can get maximum strength from your muscles and also begin the repair process ASAP. But, right after eating is still usually bad for most folks ;-) |

In general, :: this means first thing in the morning for most folks, but your :: schedule may dictate otherwise. A person on a LC woe is not likely to have a lot of insulin. I also don't see why it matters if you have a supply of dietary calories to draw from or not. If you do, then those calories you burn while exericsing won't get converted to fat (especially if you're on calorie restriction). And on top of that, if you control calorie intake, you still take fat off. If you don't have dietary calories available, then the energy comes from fat (so they say, but truth be told it matters not) but you end up eating later, so the calories are put right back. And who knows for sure when the body really uses dietary calories. Do you have a cite that shows that when a person exercises in the morning before eating that they lose more body fat than if they exercised an hour or two after eating, assuming caloric intake is held constant? I'd really like to see that. I do think that an AM workout (cardio, specificially) has some major advantages, mind you. For one, you get it over with -- a caloric deficit in the bank, so to speak. Two, you (well, I do) get an endorphin high. Three, it helps me control eating since I won't want that "deficit-in-the-bank" wasted. :: :: If you're doing strength-type exercise, the best time is when you DO :: have a ready supply of calories (specifically, proteins and carbs, :: but most folks have a post-workout drink to supply these) to draw :: from, so you can get maximum strength from your muscles and also :: begin the repair process ASAP. Also, I find no ill effect to eating soon after a weight lifting workout -- in fact, I'm usually very ready to eat then (I'm currently eating at 8x bodyweight most days) . However, eating too soon before can have a major impact on my ability to lift with any kind of intensity. However, I don't like lifting hard when hungry. |
