Offensive e-mail INFO?
Hello Priscilla,
For the sake of nailing him/her down more precisely would you please post the headers from the email? shows up in Google variously as "Penny" "Laura" "Bearz" "Penny Nunes" "Barry". There are other references of private emails from that address being sent where the recipient was less than pleased, so it looks like a pattern of sorts. Take care, Carmen |

It does come from DSLExtreme, and it looks like a dial-up account but other than that it doesn't tell much, does it? I checked, and DSLExtreme's Acceptable Use Policy doesn't allow "harassment", so if you wanted to file a complaint against the person you'd have grounds to do so. In Google the posts from that address seem to come in two distinct "personalities" - a husband and wife perhaps. Or maybe just a very moody single individual. You and he/she/it have had words in the past. (http://tinyurl.com/o5gh) Is this the first time they've gone the email route? Take care, Carmen |

I did that just before I posted his email here. I mailed it to abuse@dslextreme. In Google the posts from that address seem to come in two distinct "personalities" - a husband and wife perhaps. Or maybe just a very moody single individual. You and he/she/it have had words in the past. (http://tinyurl.com/o5gh) Is this the first time they've gone the email route? Interesting. I'd forgotten all about that. Well, it was 1.5 years ago, so I don't think I need to blame my middle-aged brain for it. What makes this weekend even more interesting is that about an hour ago I received a telephone threat. The person asked for me by name, then said something like, "Priscilla Ballou, you f*cking ho, I'm going to stomp your face!" at which point I hung up on them and called 911. This is totally unrelated to the email jerk, but it's kind of thrown me off my pace. The "non-emergency group" is supposed to be calling me back to tell me about an harassment hotline they have. I think the threat might be related to a phone call earlier this afternoon. I was called by the campaign office of one of the presidential candidates, and the caller refused to listen to me when I said I didn't accept telephone solicitation calls and to place me on their Do Not Call list. He just kept talking while I repeated myself at increasing volume. Finally, I was yelling and he was still talking about how I'd supported the candidate in the past, so I hung up... and then found the number for the local office, called them, and left a voice mail complaint. I did not, however, leave my name with the complaint, but the system could very well have collected my phone number. If the telemarketer were disciplined or fired as a result, then I could see his maybe turning around, pulling up my record, and calling me to threaten me. It's just too much of a coincidence for those two events to have happened within two hours of each other. And the voice sounded similar. I don't know that I've ever received a phone threat before, and I've lived for half a century. Priscilla, slightly freaked out -- The Episcopal Church welcomes you... and you... and you.... |

Hi Priscilla,
What a day you've had - surrounded by jerks! That sounds like a "unplug the phone and take a bubble bath with candlelight only" kind of evening. :-) DSLExtreme now knows (or will when they see the emails) about the situation with Penny/Barry, and that'll likely put an end to that. If you have CallerID you can let the answering machine get calls that come up as "Out of Area" or "Unknown Caller" or "Private". If you don't you can let the answering machine get 'em all. :-) Take care, Carmen |

You can usually find it in the front of the phone book. In my area it costs .50 per use but in situations like that it's worth it. Carmen: Yes! I'd forgotten all about that option, with CallerID. Back when I had a serious problem with a "hang-up" caller (to the tune of 20+ calls in a two-day time span that went off and on for several months) I tried using that option. The phone company waived the fee due to the sheer volume of calls. They never got a person to prosecute because the phones were payphones. It just suddenly stopped one day. It took months before I could hear the phone ring and not have my stomach get jumpy. Take care, Carmen |

In this area at least it's *57. Once you've done it three times, they will trace and investigate. Priscilla -- The Episcopal Church welcomes you... and you... and you.... |

It took months before I could hear the phone ring and not have my stomach get jumpy. I forgot something too :-) There is also a feature called "Malicious Call Trace" which is different than this one (which is called "retrieve last number" or something like that). When you activate the malicious call trace feature the last call made is traced and a record made. The record can only be accessed by a law enforcement agency, but if you are getting threats that shouldn't be a problem. Malicious Call Trace is activated by another star code that you can look up or get from the phone company. Oh, sorry, I misread the earlier post. What you're describing is *57, which the police told me about last night. Priscilla -- The Episcopal Church welcomes you... and you... and you.... |
