Curing skin troubles with low-carb
I've had some problems with acne on my face and I've been using some
medical creme to make it better. I haven't used the medication for 3 weeks now and since I've started the Atkins diet it seem to get less and less visible. Hope it will continue that way and disappear. Some claims regarding low-carb diet include curing problematic skin... What's your experience with skin problems before and while low-carbing? -- B-D_ Atkins since 11/24/03 199/189/165 |

I have some scarring that won't go away short of surgery, but this is something I can live with. After starting Atkins, my skin improved within a few months. I still get the odd breakout here and there, but no cysts at all and nothing that doesn't respond to OTC medication. Funny thing is... my face almost seems a bit oiler now. It was definitely an internal problem before LC. ~miette |

This over forty woman has stopped having breakouts every month (big glow-in-the-dark acne). If I make too many less optimal choices, I still get a pimple, but it's only one and it's almost unnoticeable. I've also stopped using dandruff shampoo. Those itchy athlete's foot-like bumps I'd get between my fingers (which the literature says is nerve and dry cold weather related) has gone completely away. My facial and back skin are no longer oily and my legs are no longer dry enough to make snow with, which I've had a problem with my entire life. -- revek "GAH. Even so, until I started eating low-carb I had had at least one bad zit a month, always in the middle of my face. Now, they are really completely gone. The only time I get them now is if I've been off of low-carb for a few days, then I am reminded how this WOE has been so good for me. I didn't start LC for that reason. It was just a really pleasant side-effect. And I hadn't heard any claims about it. It was a tremendous surprise. But nice. Rebecca |

I consider myself lucky to have two reminders of why I low- carb: one, that my blood sugar is under control (A1c of 5.9 as of two weeks ago) and two, that my hair is less oily and my skin just glows. Any time I feel tempted to stray, just thinking of the blood sugar and the zits keeps me on the straight and not-very-narrow. :-) Chakolate -- When a thing has been said and well, have no scruple. What's your experience with skin problems before and while low-carbing? Since Insulin is the "master hormone" and LCing curbs your insulin production, it's logical that excess testosterone (the cause of acne for many, many people) will be cut back too, resulting in clearing up acne. Adding good fats into your diet would help with dryness too. Makes sense to me. :-) |
