It is VERY difficult to keep from consuming HFCS as its in EVERYTHING now days! I have to avoid corn because it's a migraine trigger for me, and I don't have any difficulty at all avoiding HFCS. But then I'm not too lazy to make my own food from scratch 99.5% of the time, either. I'm not too lazy either, but come Sept/Oct I'll be lucky to set foot in my kitchen because it's the height of school volleyball season and I am completely booked for matches and tournaments. I will be living on Lean Cuisine and Subway. Most of which I can't eat, because most of those prepared foods have some form of corn or msg (another trigger) in them. I work full time and go to school part time and still manage not to resort to fast food or convenience foods; I still manage to eat "whole" foods 99% of the time. That doesn't mean I think I'm better than anyone else, it just means that I know what I have to do and I find ways to make it work because I don't have a tenable choice at this point. I had a headache almost every day for three years before I finally got them all straightened out, and I'm not exactly looking to lose any more of my life to them. For me, it's much more convenient to take five minutes to make my own tuna salad than it is to lose a day or two to a migraine. If my schedule gets more strenuous, then my planning ahead becomes more rigorous. That's just the way it has to be. Lean Cuisine is not an option for this little red hen. (It's also not an option because I don't have a microwave, but that's a whole 'nother story!) I get it. If I had allergies I'd have the same problem though I'd probably just live on tuna and cottage cheese forever. It's my mainstay when I don't lean cuisine. When I was working a vb tournament a few weekends ago I lived on instant oatmeal for breakfast and grapefruit and carrots through the day. I didn't notice because I was too busy to care. I do rely on several basic staples, just like you do. When I say I make my food from scratch, I don't mean that I'm spending hours in the kitchen whipping up five course meals or anything. The household consists of me and three-quarters of a cat, so that would be kind of silly. I eat a lot of chicken or tuna or turkey salad on Wasa, egg sandwiches, veggie salads, peanut butter, yogurt - stuff like that. There are a few pre-made things I keep on hand for when I'm super-busy, but they come from either Trader Joe's or the health food store and the ingredient lists are short. Bottom line: it's not very difficult to avoid HFCS. (Yes, I had to scroll back up to figure out why we were talking about this.) Anyone who thinks it is just isn't trying hard enough. There's a lot of food out there that doesn't have it. |

That is the most absurd statement I have ever heard from any human being.

Speaking of (possibly) kind of silly... what happened to the rest of that cat? He got hit by a car (two years ago this month, actually) and lost one of his hind legs and his tail. It was pretty traumatic at the time, but he pulled through like the champ he is and has completely adapted to his new situation. |
