I've been informed that almonds will have to be pasteurized. Is this
one more government attempt in the U.S. and Canada to exerrt control
or is it a significant health measure?

Almonds must be pasteurized, say new USDA rules

By Lorraine Heller

4/6/2007 - All almonds originating from California will have to comply
with strict new pasteurization regulations, implemented last week by
the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) in response to recent
salmonella outbreaks.

With mandatory compliance set for September 1 2007, the new
regulations mean that no almonds may be handled or used in processed
goods unless they meet the pasteurization requirements.

Antioxidant-rich almonds may help in blood sugar control
Almonds could suppress appetite, tackle obesity
New almond database documents the nut's sensory characteristics
Research helps cut salmonella contamination
Researchers develop cheaper food safety techniques
Scientists crack down on global impact of food borne pathogens
Food safety focus for fresh produce

If we don't solve the current bee crisis we may have no almonds at all in
the near future...I don't understand why the missing bees in not a bigger
issue...Maybe now that we know who sired Anna Nichol's baby we can get down
to other issues of importance...Oh well...GG

LOL

It figures the father would not match the birth certificate. My money was
on the husband of Zsa Zsa.

For me, almonds are the most treacherous of foods. Almonds are healthy
wonderful food. Thus, I feel I should have them. Yet, I know from
experience that I can eat 6000 calories in almonds and not feel full for
very long.

Smart & Final sells them in the giant sized cans.

I wouldn't eat too many almondsat once, as Bitter almonds contain 3 to
5% amygdalin, a so-called cyanogenic glycoside composed of mandelic
nitrile and gentobiose.

I don't have a problem with almonds. I measure out 1/2 ounce of them
and that's all I eat in one day.

The only nuts I buy are almonds, walnut halves, and pistachios for the
DH. (I don't care too much for pistachios.)

Anything salted, though, like cashews, different story.

You may have touched on my problem, because I would buy the Smokehouse or
Barbeque flavored almonds.

Hmmm...hope that doesn't raise the price. I put a dozen raw almonds in my
cereal each morning.

BTW - the subject line had me confused. When I first opened your post, I
assumed it was about Chung :-).
