Default My story so far (long and boring maybe :))

Hello all I have been a lurker for some time now. I believe it is my
time to tell my little story so here it goes.

I am a 40 year old male. I have never dieted in my entire life with
the exception of my heavy lifting period in which i ate low fat to get
my body as lean as possible. I have really never had a weight problem
either.

I am a large man. I have a large skeleton and muscle mass. When I was
at my peak shape playing sports and lifting weights etc I weighed 230
lbs. I am also 6'4" tall.

Well almost 9 glorious years ago I was blessed with my third child.
This connected with moving to a desk job really slowed my physical
activity level down. I began to slowly put on weight. Earlier this
summer I tipped the scales at 300 lbs. My clothes were too tight,
again, and I didn't have a lot of energy. I even dreaded getting up
and down off of the floor.

A friend and I were talking one day and the low carb "Atkins" diet
came up. I thought what the heck I will give it a go. My wife picked
the book up one day while shopping I read it cover to cover and set my
start date as 9-20-03.

I have never been a really big eater. I have many friends that could
eat me under the table so to speak. So I wasn't really concerned about
eating less but was more concerned about cravings. After reading the
book I realized that I was seriously addicted to carbohydrates. I can
remember many days never feelings full or satisfied. I would eat non
stop on those days. Not big meals but grazing all day mainly on high
carb foods and snacks.

The day to start arrived and I dove straight in with induction. I
followed the book roughly. I did not measure all of my vegetables and
salad. I just ate until I was full.

The first three days were somewhat hard on me. I can remember thinking
to myself, all I wanted to do was eat a cup full of sugar. I was
craving carbs in a bad way. On the fourth day something of a miracle
happened to me. My breath started smelling and I had a funny taste in
my mouth. My urine was yellow and a little smelly ( as a side note, my
urine is never yellow. I drink almost a gallon of water a day, always
have and probably always will) and the carb craving went away. The
rest of the week was filled with wonder also. I had a lot of energy. I
mean a whole lot of energy. I didn't get hungry that often. I had to
remind myself to eat at times.

Here it is 11-13-03 and I still feel the same way. I am still mostly
on the induction level of carbohydrates. I try to keep to around 20
carbs a day. I don't really measure anything at all it just feels
right what i eat. One of the biggest surprises to me is that i dont
feel tied to food any more. I just really don't care about eating. Now
I still enjoy dinner time with my family but the tie/addiction to food
doesn't seem to be there any more. I am very happy with this.

Now for the results, I guess its been about 8 weeks. I last weighed
two days ago (don't really weigh that often) and i was right at 270
lbs. So i have lost 30 pounds give or take a few. Four pounds a week.
I am happy with that. My clothes really don't fit any more. All of my
jeans fall off of my body because my belt is at its smallest notch. My
T shirts and dress shirts are all very loose also. I think I have lost
the most inches/bulk on my upper torso (shoulders chest neck) and my
thighes/ass. I still have most of my belly . About two week in I
stopped snoring *wifey was really happy about that).

I will continue this journey at by current carb rate until I reach my
goal. Don't really have a goal yet i guess i will know it when i get
there. Imf guessin any where in the 240's. Then I will switch over to
an Atkins for life type structure.

Meals: Breakfast is either 3 egg omelette or a bowl of keto crisp with
westland slenda soy milk stuff or keto hot cereal banana nut ( I love
this stuff I will probably eat it the rest of my life). Lunch depends
leftovers from dinner maybe or meat and cheese with a salad maybe tuna
salad. Dinner ill eat with the family if its relatively low carb. I do
eat a lot of stir fry and salad. I supplement meals with atkins or eas
shakes and eas bars. I love the vanilla Atkins shakes BTW yummy.

I still have a hard time with rice, pasta and bread. We still are
really big into these two staples and if I was ever to cheat it would
be here.

Well thats my 8 week story in a nutshell. I would like to take this
time to thank each and everyone of you that participate in this group.
It has truly been a great inspiration to me not to mention chock full
of great idea.
God Bless you all.

Welcome BILL!

Great job changing your way of eating, sounds like you are one of the
many people who benefit from kicking the hi-carb habit so to speak.
Sounds like you are doing it all right for now, your results speak for
themselves.

Keep us posted and keep at it!

What a wonderful introduction mail. It is great to hear you have such
success with lowcarb, but most of all I am happy that you have that
"liberation" feeling now, that you are no longer thinking of food all
the time. For me that is the biggest plus on the WOE.
