Default Wife is pregnant. Now to start adding carbs back

Hi all,

My wife is pregnant and has been on the low carb diet for 6 months now with
great sucess. However, now that she is pregnant, I am looking for
information on adding carbs back to her diet without going overboard.

I don't think she should just eat all the carbs she can handle. I am sure
there has to be some level of carbs that is safe for our pending baby as
well as keep her from gaining too much weight during pregnancy.

If anyone has been through this and has advice based on their experiences, I
would appreciate the feedback.

And of course she is going to talk to her doctor about it.

definitely get them above 100 g, so there's no ketosis. Also, she needs to
be able to grow, so the carbs will better enable storage and will bring on
more appetite to help. I wouldnt' suggest going hog wild, but being
reasonable ought not to be a hard thing to do.

I'll be interested to know what y'all end up doing.

The safest approach is to eat over 100 grams a day, but not much over. To
control blood sugar, eat smaller more frequent meals with no more than 20
grams a meal. Try to get your carbs from slow acting carbs like bran-rich
bread, sourdough, beans, small servings of pasta, whole grains, and veggies.

Make sure your doctor screens your wife for gestational diabetes and if it
develops, you may need to cut back further on the carbs and eat more
frequent small meals.

Lots of good quality protein. Since the carbs are higher, go a bit easier on
the fats. You need some, but not as much as when you have your carbs very
low.

Cut back on the coffee.

Don't drink alcohol.

Avoid optional medications.

Best wishes for a healthy baby and a wonderful life as a family!

Maybe try to do a Zone-type thing. Get carbs from whole fruits, veggies and
whole grains and eat them in balance with protein and fat. This will help
keep her from going into a carb-addict binge.

The Atkins book notes that the only safe phase of LC during pregnancy is the
maintenance phase.

That's the only phase where one doesn't expect to lose weight (a woman w/
child doesn't need to try to lose weight). Also, in maintenance, once could
still be under 100 g of carbs per day.

I would disagree. Obesity in pregnancy is not a healthy approach for
the mother or the child.

um, not losing weight != obesity. you should maintain a healthy weight
during pregnancy.

i'd recommend that she eat all the carbs she wants, as long as they're from
whole food sources. no processed flour or processed sugar. whole grain
bread, brown rice, fruits, veggies, maybe a little honey as a sweetener, if
necessary.

I'm not suggesting obesity, just not losing weight. Are you suggesting this
keep trying to lose weight?
