Default observation on refined carbs

One of the elements of my regime has been to cut out unrefined
carbohydrates. I haven't had indigestion once since doing that until
TODAY, when I had a Lean Cuisine pizza for supper. Now I sit here
thinking kind thoughts about pepcid and its friends.
Interesting, hey?
I guess I will have the occasional thing like that until I finish
"eating the freezer down" or can give the stuff away to friends.....
then I can make up my own freezer pizzas with whole-wheat crusts!
14 pounds down this morning and a full pants size!

Carbs aren't usually one of the foods that causes indigestion and
heartburn. Just starting a healthy eating plan often eliminates the
foods that are the main contributors.

This reinforces what my dr. told me to do about my esophagitis, avoid fatty
food. I've also given up caffeine entirely now. Haven't had an attack
since June yet I eat plenty of carbs. Go figure.

Begging your pardon Beverly, I use a fair amount of fat but since
having to exclude refined carbs have no heartburn.

you got that! I avoid fats as well, so it was interesting to me that
the only element there was the refined flour! I have been doing low fat
for so long that fatty foods now make me downright nauseated! (ain't it
great?) But you are right that fats can make you miserable fast!
Once you get your diet in balance, your whole digestive process
improves, as well as you attitude to food. I tend to look at something
and think "what is this going to do for me?" instead of my old "that
looks like fun to eat!"

I would like to clarify my statement, so you don't continue to misquote
me: I refer to REFINED carbohydrates. I would NEVER recommend cutting
out carbohydrates...I would even suggest that one increase intake of
complex carbohydrates. I do and have so far lost 14 pounds with no sign
of stopping, so don't insult my intelligence by associating my posts
with the Atkins garbage!!

It's just overeating that gives me heartburn. It normally disappears
if I stick to a limited amount of food.

Just for your information, white flour is a "complex carbohydrate". It
is not logical to suggest to "increase intake of complex
carbohydrates" in one sentence and to "reduce intake of white flour"
in another.

Simple carbs are sugar molecules, either alone, or coupled with one
single sugar molecule. They are called monosaccharides and
disaccharides.

Complex carbs are sugar molecules combined in longer chains, they are
called polysaccharides, or, more simply, starch.

Some examples.

Simple carbs: apples, most fruits, soft drinks, candy

Complex carbs: potatoes, flour, corn, bananas (have both simple and complex carbs)

Both simple and complex carbs are converted to glucose once they are
digested.

the point is that complex carbohydrates digest more slowly. I accept
the slap on the white flour...but is a refined carb and thus metabolizes
more quickly. Plus it lacks fiber, which is a big deal for health.
