Default Skinny Model Ban

Personally, I'm not quite sure how I feel about this...but I'm a rail
sitter on most topics anyway.

I know some of you have struggled with eating disorders and many of us
have body image issues--will a ban on waif-models help? In my opinion,
not until the rest of the media and style industries follow suit.

I agree; I also think way more people are influenced by the movie stars
and such than they are by fashion models. But maybe the movie stars
are influenced by fashion models? Or maybe if designers made all their
sample clothing in sizes 4 and up, instead of size 0, movie stars would
be motivated to maintain a healthier weight? Dunno... but I do think
these stick-thin models and stars look terrible.

I don't think the ban will help. What would be super refreshing to me
though is to see some "real" looking women with more typical proportions
modelling. Like, a size 10 or something...

I'm a libertarian so in general I don't think laws are the way to
handle social issues. Legislating morality does not work per
the lesson of Prohibition in the US (now being repeated with
drugs other than alcohol which are more immoral than alcohol
and just as fruitless to fight with laws).

It's not the principle I dislike it's the method they used. I
think all a law will trigger is a rection against the law not
actual healthly change. And from the little i've read in the news
the outage does look like that predictable reaction.

I think social approaches should be used to solve social
issues. Boycotts and so on. But how to boycott models
wearing clothes no one I know ever buys because no one I
know ever weighs that little? If money talks, where's the
money coming from to support these pitiful sick girls? Not
from me and not from anyone I know who chooses to spend
their money. It has to be some indirect channel.

While I find the ban creepy because of my political leanings and
I am glad it didn't happen in my nation, I'm hopefull that it will
help through social awareness here.

I agree with Willow. It's a start. And I'm not having any of this
"discrimination against the thin" and "designers rights". When did they not
discriminate against the old, the short, the overweight etc.

the thing about these models is they have microtransmitters embedded in
their eyes and hypnotize people into thinking they are thin, think "shallow
hal" or "amistad"

really gets you THINKING...

Yes, what really get's me thinking is, what the hell does the amistad have
to do with this? There were now embedded microtransmitters mentioned on
that movie....

Jenny, perhaps you may want to speak with your doctor about upping your
medication. Or maybe you should see about having your microtransmitters
adjusted.
