Default Anyone for grapefruit? New study.

It sounds almost too good to be true: "The participants drinking
grapefruit juice lost an average of 3.3 pounds. But those in the
control group who consumed no grapefruit only lost an average of 0.5
pounds. The researchers said the weight loss was probably linked to
lowered levels of insulin, which was born out by measurements of
glucose levels." Well, I'm a sucker for new things and will now drink
grapefruit juice before some meals. One logical connection -
grapefruit is acid, and acid reduces glycemic response. Here's a link

I eat a grapefruit every day. You think that works as well as just the
juice?

I don't see much new about this. The theory that grapefruit juice or
the fruit has magical properties for weight loss has been around for
years. I treat it with the usual scepticism I have for anything like
this, but if someone can prove it works then perhaps I'm wrong.

You're right, and one study doesn't prove anything - but I'm a sucker
for new stuff - hope spings eternal. My Hba1c, a measure of avg blood
glucose, is good at 5.2 but I'd love to be under 5.0 Why? Hba1c is
better risk measure than cholesterol both for heart disease and for
mortality. If your Hba1c is over 7.0 you're in the diabetic range.
High levels of glucose in the blood causes the sugar molecules to
stick to the red blood cells, and creates a poison called sorbital.

Does grapefruit work as well? I mean I eat 1/2 each morning . Maybe I
need to also drink the juice too?

How is that meaured? glucose? I mean the numbers were 'greek to me' but
I take my blood sugar on DH lttle machine and it is about 70 every time.

Notice that they didn't mention how their diet was controlled during
the study. Betcha 2 pounds of food that sent the subjects home with
food journals and "took their word on it". Only when they lock the
subjects up in metabolic wards and strictly control their calorie
intake and exercise activities will I believe that grapefruit has
magical slimming properties.

However, I wound consider the possibility that the grapefruit prompted
some "real world" changes that lead to weight loss in the "real world"
such as reducing appetite or prompting the subject to move more and/or
that it might have some minor effects on MBR and these changes might
lead to weight loss among people who were already eating somewhere in
the neighborhood of "normal". IMHO if weight loss supplements work,
it's these kind of people that work for. (it's also probably these
"neighborhood of normal" eaters who are chosen for such studies)

The problem happens when Peter and Paula Pigout who are eating
thousands of calories a day beyond their daily calorie requirements
hear about these magic supplements and see them advertised on TV try
them and they obviously don't work.

I don't think that it's the same thing. My dad's diabetic and my mother has
checked my blood on his tester and told me that anything below 100 means
you're OK. A lady at a health screening who was doing the tests also told
me that too. I hope they knew what they're talking about.

There were three test groups, one group ate 1/2 grapefruit before each meal,
one drank some juice and the control group didn't do either. The group
that ate the 1/2s had the best result, average of 3.6 pounds lost vs. 3.3
pounds average for the juice group. I love grapefruit. I think I'll pick
up a bag when I'm shopping today.

The article didn't claim any magical fat-burning properties of
grapefruit (as in eat all you want, then down a glass of grapefruit
juice and you'll be thin overnight) just that it controls insulin
production.
