Damn it's hard
To lose weight, but especially, get more fit, I don't seem to be making
any gains at all in the gym. I guess we have to exercise every damn day, but in the winter, that's more difficult. I don't think walking in the snow can be all that good for calorie burning. Maybe I need to do weightlifting , and buy some barbells and free weights. Plus, all ya need is a couple of days when stress makes you see more comfort food, and boom, negates any progress. How do you guys/gals stay motivated ? |

Source:http://wintertrails.org/wintertrails.php?section=news&page=facts Same for cross-country skiing at a moderate effort. I used to hate winter, but I started getting out more these past few winters (thanks to geocaching) and now look forward to it. |

It's snowing right now, but there won't be enough for snowshoes until X-mas. -- the volleyballchick |

I was looking at some on the internet but I don't think we get enough snow around here to get much use out of them. With that said we'll probably have record snowfalls this year Beverly |

I don't think walking in the snow can be all that good for calorie burning. Try snowshoeing--it's wonderful. I'm also thinking of picking up a set of used x-country skis for more winter fun! Maybe I need to do weightlifting , and buy some barbells and free weights. There's your best bet for getting fitter. Cardio is a must, but so is lifting. Plus, all ya need is a couple of days when stress makes you see more comfort food, and boom, negates any progress. How do you guys/gals stay motivated ? Try something new--like taking a pilates or yoga class, or get involved in a team sport. Participate in an exercise competition--my gym is doing a "fitness journey" through America's national parks--we log the number of minutes we exercise per day, and multiply that time by 8 (advanced) or 12 (novice) to figure the number of "miles" we've travelled. They hand out prizes every week--in fact, I just found out I was last week's winner! And while I had a fairly indulgent (food- and drink-wise) weekend, I was up early and at the gym by 7 am, getting back on track. You have to remember that this is a life-long process, and you have time to take it day-by-day. Cheers! Amy 168/117/... |

I'm actually sick to death of people going on about "Lifestyle change"
and "Life-long change" I find it really demotivating. It is a tragic thing in my mind to think that I will be eating cabbage soup for the rest of my life. You go on a diet to lose weight, not to be misserable for the rest of your life. You need to set yourself small goals - settle on a 6 or 8 week program and cellebrate at the end of it. Or have a goal of losing 5-10% of your weight and cellebrate that. Work towards a goal - you don't want to be on that diet for ever - remember that every departure from your diet makes it another day you will be on the diet. Ultimatly you must *learn* from your diet - learn how to be satisfied with less food. Learn some good exercise habits. Remember that the cabbage soup is lurking around the corner if you put on too much weight. Watch your weight. Take steps, plenty of them, with or without show shoes. And most of all, be happy! |

Amy That's about what I would say. OTOH there are people who "snowshoe" without snow up here, including the snowshoe baseball league. I generally wait for a decent 6" base, as long as the rocks and branches are covered well otherwise my snowshoes get dinged up too much but if I go too deep into the woods there's just never a good enough base. I'll also walk on the frozen lakes as soon as it is safe to do so. We snowshoe to our ice fishing spots. The deeper the snow, the harder the work. -- the volleyballchick |

It is a tragic thing in my mind to think that I will be eating cabbage soup for the rest of my life. Perhaps it depends on what kind of cabbage soup you are talking about. I cook cabbage soup with a lot of fatty ground meat, and it is very tasty and satisfying. By the way, contrary to myths, most fat in meat is not saturated. But meat is a significant source of saturated fat so that's just playing with numbers. -- the volleyballchick |
