Potluck at work

Maybe I'm just looking for the polite way of handling it. Bowing out as in not going at all? Screw that. You'll look impolite if you do that. This is a new job right? and part of the politics of fitting in is socializing. Maybe after you've been there a while you could start skipping these things, but skipping the first one might send an anti-social message. Just bring a low-carb dish and eat only the low-carb choices. Who knows, you may be surprised! Low-carb is becoming so popular, other people might be on it too. -- -Michelle Levin (Luna) http://www.mindspring.com/~lunachick http://www.mindspring.com/~designbyluna |

Potluck at work
Thanks for all of your tips.
I guess I'm leaning towards just politely bowing out. Up to now I've been leaving work for my lunch anyways. Maybe I'm just looking for the polite way of handling it. Probably not a good idea with a brand new job. Unless you truely have a doctors appt @ that same time, I'd put in an appearance. Eat some salad, eat some meat, eat some of the low carb appetizers and cheese and get to know some of your new coworkers. Have a good time! Susan |

Potluck at work

congratulations on your new job! As for potlucks, I always take something low carb so that I know I will have something good to eat. Usually there are a lot of low carb foods available. ideas: 7 layer salad (everyone always loves this) deviled eggs roll ups with ham, cream cheese and a pickle or green onion inside chicken geesh, my brain isn't working this morning. Sorry i can't come up with more ideas right now. Crustless quiche went over well (even w/ some people who said they don't like quiche) For a dessert party, I brought mixed berries, mascarpone and put packets of sweetener next to them. It was quite popular. most people don't care about what YOU are eating, they are more concerned with what they are going to eat. If they question you, just say you're avoiding sugar. Usually, if you've got a a reasonably well stocked plate, people won't even notice the particulars. Martha -- Begin where you are - but don't end there. |

I'm the most anti-social person I know and I usually loathe these get togethers (they're actually ok where I work now), but I would not do that for two reasons. First, these get togethers aren't about the food, they're about bringing the workforce together as a community. If you don't participate, you're not only sending a signal (and not a good one) but you're also missing the opportunity to build relationships with your co-workers. Second, if you're planning on following this way of eating for the rest of your life, then you might as well start working on your low carb eating skills. That includes figuring out how to stick to your plan in trying situations. This isn't the worst one you'll face: if you bring a dish you'll know there's at least one thing you can eat, and if you're worried that you'll go off plan, you can have a snack in advance so you're not facing tempting food when you're hungry. Potluck at work
I like Lori's idea, best to bring something you made that you can have and
enjoy your own food. Make sure you bring a couple copies of your recipe because you will probably find others low carbing it too FTR, if someone insists that I eat something (cake & ice cream. etc) I just politely explain that I am allergic and enjoy the coffee, loaded with cream (and Splenda from my purse). It IS very true, I break out in fat when I eat high carb foods. Frankly I wonder if there is even more truth in that. When I eat too many carbs my joints ache! I was just wondering how other people have handled or would handle this kind of situation. |
