I saw lots of really fat people in those electric scooters today
I am retired and I went down to a local, discount supermarket today to
stock up on nonperishables. It's the first time that I had been to this particular establishment on the first day of the month. I could not help but notice that there were tons (pardon the pun) of really fat people riding around the aisles in electric scooters. The smallest of them probably weighed around 400 pounds. As I traversed the aisles with my cart, the scooters always seemed to be blocking the way for others and parked squarely in front of junk food. People were being delayed in their grocery shopping while these scooter driving fat people made up their mind what kind of cookies and such they wanted to buy. I observed that the baskets in the scooters were not exactly brimming with health food. While shopping, I bumped into the manager. I related my observations to him. The manager let me know that it was the first of the month and that's when people who are retired or on welfare get paid. I told him that the people riding in the scooters looked to be anywhere from their late 20's to early 40's. The manager explained that the people in the scooters were on disability because they were too fat to work. He went on to explain that this store, because it had a lot of junk food at low prices, tended to attract many of the really fat people in the local area. Because the really fat people loved this supermarket, they had 10 of these electric scooters available. The manager said that the first of the month is so busy with the really fat people that sometimes all the scooters get used and there's a small line to ride one. What is this country coming to? |

Jeez.. Only in America.
I was reading in a magazine I subscribe to, that some woman from England, who had just moved to the states, wrote the editor and complained about the large serving sizes here in America, and asked the editor if she didn't feel this was partly responsible for the increasing obesity in America. The editor posted several letters in the next issue from American housewives who were enraged at this. You would think this woman had attacked the flag, when all she'd done is ask why our portion sizes are so huge here. She'd been wanting to know if they could do at least some recipes in "normal" serving sizes. This is truly sad. I decided to write the editor and scold her for not showing both sides of the issue, and for not being intelligent enough to realize this lady was exactly right, and not slamming "America". I think there is something like 60% obese in this country now? Disgusting... lucy, a wife who realizes the importance of looking my best for my own health, and for my husband's eyesight grins "Retired Guy" wrote in message ... This lady is probably some whacked-out type that doesn't know how to scale a recipe. BJ |

My profession has more obese members than most other professions. The problem is upbringing. "Clean your plate" "Starving kids in .... " There IS an obesity problem in our country. And the problem is spreading to other countries. But without a doubt, the fattest states I ever traveled were the states surrounding the Great Lakes. Good Grief! It was a rare sight to see a woman with hips narrower than her shoulders or men without a beer belly and/or love handles. Also, a diet featuring salt, sugar, animal fat, and alcohol is almost guaranteed to put pounds on the average person. -- - Philip @ Maximum Torque RPM |

I used to drive tractor trailer, mostly in the 12 western states. My profession has more obese members than most other professions. The I was driving 8 hours a day, twice a week for a year while working on my degree. I noticed that on those days I wasn't burning any calories to speak of. I finally learned that I shouldn't eat any breakfast before the trip and also shouldn't stop to eat during the trip. (Nor snacks during the trip). Driving evidently burns less calories than anything else. Les |

Then ya park for 8 hrs and sleep ... maybe some walking around in a truck stop or a mall. Your left leg and right arm get a little use shifting gears in the mountains but that's it. All that sitting combined with a low fiber / high protein diet (eggs, bacon, potatoes or pancakes) wreaks hell on your intestines and prostate too. I shouldn't bring in the dangers of vascular leg thrombosis. I used to nibble on Triscuit or the small Shredded Wheats and drink bottled water. The munching kept me awake and provided a tension outlet and the water was FAR better (and cheaper) for me than gallons of coffee and/or soft drinks like so many truckers consume. -- - Philip @ Maximum Torque RPM |

An hour or so after waking up, your blood sugar is close to a low point, and for people with sugar balance problems (including a larger per centage of overweight people), that is almost bound to affect reaction time and coordination. No, I am not advocating a truckstop/farmer/MickeyD breakfast, sitting like lead. But a small cup of 'healthy' cereal with skim milk, and maybe a piece of fruit, would keep your blood sugar a lot more stable. Sitting at home, do as you please, but when you are on same highway as me, I want your reactions as good as they can be. A sugar crash can be as dangerous as being drunk. And it can even happen to 'normal' people when they fast like that. Moderation, grasshopper, moderation. aem sends..... |

Truck Stop portions are too much. NO arguement there! But then ... truckers are not the customer base for steakhouses like the Big Texan in Amarillo who FEATURES a 72 ounce steak with all the trimmin's! That FOUR and a HALF *POUNDS* of beef! -- - Philip @ Maximum Torque RPM |
