Default treadmill or exercycle?

I haven't "lived" in cold country in about 15 yrs, but I grew up in
cold country. Last year when I went to Vermont for NY, I realized
that when its cold and I go for a walk, I get much more of a workout
than a walk in FL. Afterall, you wear about 20lbs of clothing, and
another 15lbs in boots to tromp through the snow and ice. Alll that
extra weight has to be good for you.

The only hinderance we have in FL is the time change interfering with
my evening workouts. I leave for work and its still dark, I get home
from work and its dark - so I'm limited to doing an activity that is
"dark friendly"... and jogging along a dark road (we don't have
streetlights in my neighborhood) is not fun, as I'm afraid I'd trip
and fall on something.

We have the dark problem too. One reason I can't run outdoors during the
winter is that there is nowhere to go but the roads and with blind curves
it's way too dangerous. It's dangerous enough without ice and snow, but at
least a person can hop off of the side of the road into the grass and weeds.
Hard to hop a 3' snow(ice) bank when a car doesn't see you. The trails and
rural roads I use during the warm weather are now snowmobile trails and
they're worse than cars - and the packed snow is way too slippery. I'd
probably fall and break a hip or something.

You do burn more calories in the cold, but not a significant amount. Where
the burn comes in is stomping around through knee to ass-deep snow. I wear
mukluks which are as light as my running shoes, but a good sized snowshoe or
ski obviously makes a difference. The problem for me isn't warmth but wind
which is why I'm patiently waiting for my Land's End pants. Then I'll just
tromp around through the woods and across the lakes regardless of the snow
depth and wave to the ice fishermen as I go by.

I've got a workout mix filled with fast songs that really get me moving.
Some favorite ones are "You shook me all night long" by AC/DC,
"Shattered" by the Rolling Stones, Suffragette City by David Bowie, "We
Got the Beat" by the Go Gos, "My Sharona" by The Knack... I don't have
time to type in the whole list. Anyone got top workout tunes they'd
like to share?

Surprisingly, "Linus & Lucy" from the Vince Guaraldi Trio is fun to run to.
With headphones, there's an underlying beat pattern that keeps me at a good
pace. My other favorites are "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers and some
Earth, Wind, & Fire tunes. Other goodies for me are "Hero of the Day" by
Metallica (slow then fast), "Head On" by Jesus and Mary Chain, "Sugar
Magnolia" by the Grateful Dead, "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure, and "Blue
Monday" by New Order. I also have "Times Like These" by Foo Fighters which
is newer but cool.

This is why I am waiting before buying another machine. I had a
Nordic Trak and while most people like it, I hated it and had never
tried one before buying it. Sold that and got a Gazelle. It was nice
when I was just starting out, but once I got into running, I never
touched it again. Just sold it yesterday. I'm waiting patiently to
see whether I should go for the treadmill or the elliptical. Right
now it's considerably cheaper for me to keep going to the fitness
center that I go to and have access to both machines and it gets me
out of the house on weekends and holidays. In a month's time I've put
40 miles on the treadmill (running and walking) and 35 miles on the
elliptical.

Jenn

Waiting is.

I've tried my sister's Nordic Trak twice and hurt my back both times. (in
fairness, I had no clue what I was doing and it was before I had ever
started losing weight)

I wish my treadmill had a cumulative mileage counter. It would be fun to
see those zeros turn over g

I've got a recumbent bike. BF bought it for *us* (me...) back about
4 yrs ago to help me out. Although he did buy a commercial grade
one and its a really nice bike, its one that sits in the spare room
and gets used just every so often, as I much prefer outdoor
activities.

To do it all over again, I'd probably go for a good elliptical. But
then again - I don't know if any indoor exercise machine would get
utilized much. I just prefer the outdoors and moving through nature.

I prefer the outdoors too, but times like this when the predicted high
temperature is 0 with wind chills in the negative double digits limits
how much nature I care to deal with If I lived in a warmer
climate, I'd be outdoors every day like I was in spring/summer/fall.
If we'd get some darn snow it would be worth braving the cold & wind
(and if my Land's End snow pants would get here...)

Jenn

Ditto ditto It's dark at 4:10 right now. That's already 10 minutes
better than the shortest day you outdoor fiends!

I got some great Columbia snowpants last winter on eBay. Now I'm praying
I'll get to use them this year.

I keep track of my mileage in my runner's log. I have a program for my palm
that tracks a lot of data for running. I am able to differentiate between
the treadmill and regular running and summarize my data in a few clicks. I
have to keep track of the mileage on my shoes because it's good practice to
change shoes every 300 miles or so. I like seeing the gradual improvement
in my speed over the months.
It will also do walking, biking, and any other exercise I want so I was able
to set it up to keep track of the elliptical too.
Started using the log on 7/28 - I've run 188 miles since then.

I guess I will just have to accept that you have different musical
preferances then me and get on with my life somehow, some way...

That's why I said it with a smiley, I'm a metalhead. Anyone who isn't,
probably has never heard of the music I listen to. It's not played on
commercial radio (though I play metal on my college radio show). IMO, the
best music is NOT the top 40 crap.

I love that AC/DC song.. I have it on my mp3 too. I also like listening to
enigma from the 1st and 2nd cd's. Allot of those songs have a great beat
and literally makes my spirit soar.
