Default Depressed, discouraged, hopeless

I am depressed, discouraged and hopeless. In 2002 I did Atkins and lost 45
lbs.

In 2003 I proceeded to break an arm and have a cast for 13 weeks which
included ending up hospitalized for blood clots. No sooner did I get the
cast removed from my arm then my foot starts hurting and after months of
pain finally went to the doctor. After trying this and that he found out I
had been walking on a broken heel for 3 months. Another cast and physical
therapy later brought the year to a close (thank goodness) but all my weigh
has returned too. I'm back to 230lbs

I have gone back to Atkins. During my first week of induction the scale
dropped 6 lbs after a couple of days but then it went back up so I only
lost a total of 2.5lbs the first week. I never had this trouble before. I
drink a gallon of water a day, take supplements, follow the diet on fitday
and walk. Same procedure that worked before. No diet drinks, no coffee, no
sugar substitutes, and looking for hidden carbs.

I am sitting here crying onto my keyboard I am so upset. Any ideas would be
appreciated. Thank you.

Maryann, did you take measurements? (sorry for my English I'm not a
native speaker).

You are probably building muscles while walking, since you may have lost
a lot of muscles when you were hospitalized and couldn't walk. Just keep
up the good work, you will soon see results.

Maryann,

You have to remember that muscle weighs more than fat. So as you
increase activity, you are losing fat and building muscle. You will
notice the biggest difference with your inches lost than with weight
lost.

Have heart! You are doing great!

Don't be discouraged! Physical injuries and illnesses set all back
and they are out of our control. Focus on your diet and implement an exercise
program that is not too ambitious and fits what you can presently do and take
it from there! Things will get better. And, sidenote to Petra from Germany,
how DO you get by with all that tempting spaetzle? Is there a low carb version
of spaetzle?

*grin* spaetzle ist just a local variety of freshly made pasta. I don't
think there is a low carb version. I don't miss Spaetzle, though. I
don't miss pasta, either... ymmv, as always.

Maryann,

The second time you do a low carb diet, weight loss does not start out with
the dramatic drop you experienced the first time. Your body has gotten
smarter about recognizing the low carb state since it has been trained to
function in it so you don't get that "bonus" early weight loss that seems to
be the result of some kind of metabolic confusion. .

But if you stick with the diet you should see slow but steady weight loss.

I've done a whole lot better on my second stint of low carbing.

This time I was more careful about tracking what I ate (using software) and
checking on portion sizes, but I had a very tough time losing weight my
first time. If you lost successfully and are losing now, just double check
that you aren't eating more than about 10 times your current body weight in
calories since calories do matter. It's also a good idea to go very easy on
any "low carb" junk foods that you might be tempted to add to your diet, now
that they are in all the stores. They can push up your daily calorie count
considerably and may contain sugar alcohols that act like full fledged carbs
for some people.

Read here every day, ask your questions and be patient!

A couple of things.

As Jenny mentioned, the second time around you don't seem to get that
incredible 10 lbs in 14 days thing. I am personally experiencing this
also. Secondly, 2.5 lbs/week is a very very successful diet. I'm
shooting for 1 lb/week and will be very happy if I sustain this over
the whole year.

Keep up the exercise, I'm glad your back on your feet (pun intended).

Keep posting and I'll see you at the finish line.

We all have hobbyhorses here and this is mine.

This sounds like it might be a hormonal situation. Lots of women find that
water gain during their cycle masks the normal drop in water weight as
well as any drop in fat. If you've only been back on plan for a week, 2.5
lbs isn't really a bad amount to have lost.

If you're coming up on your period (and the weepieness sounds like you
might be), you could be due for a pleasant drop in a few days.

It's important for everyone to take a long view of their progress and not
get depressed because they haven't dropped any more of the weight in the
last ten minutes, but for women in the childbearing years it's even more
useful to look at your progress from cycle to cycle, not from day to day.

If the above doesn't apply to you, then think whether you've been eating
something unusually salty. That can cause temporary water gain.

Martha

MaryAnn,
It sounds like you have received some solid advice, so I'm just going
to cover the pep talk side, ok? Sometimes we also need a good cry, a
hot bubble bath, and time to think about what we have read. Sometimes
our expectations make it difficult for us to appreciate a 2.5 pound
loss. When this happens to me I try to think of what 2.5 pounds is
actually like. I find something in my kitchen that is a similar
weight, and pick it up. It helps to keep your perspective that 2.5
pounds lost is fantastic! Keep your chin up, post and read daily,
measure yourself, and delight in your changes! I'll be watching for
your posts!
Blessings to all,
Jeano
