Default Female Hormones :-(

Ellen,

Flax oil acts as a female hormone mimic. That means that if a person has
some hormonal problems already, it might change the balance in a way that
causes problems. For me it had the same effect as taking progesterone pills
have had.

I'm very sensitive to that progesterone--so much so that I cannot take it,
ever. If I take even very small doses, I'll start off getting an intense
attack of intense moodiness where I'll have crying fits in response to
nothing, then my breasts will start to hurt very badly, and if I keep taking
it I'll start nonstop overwhelming bleeding.
I used to have terrible PMS before the merciful arrival of menopause.

After a couple days of the flax oil I got the moodiness and the breast
tenderness. I spoke with a university researcher who works with estrogenic
compounds in the environment. She told me that while Flax oil is known to
have a hormonal effect, no one is quite sure what exactly what chemical it
is in flax oil and which hormone it mimics, and that she had a graduate
student who was looking into it.

Are you using flax seed or flax seed oil? The symptom you describe is

supplementation.
Stopping the supplement helped a lot.

No flax seed/oil for me. I don't eat/drink anything out of the norm. No
supplements except for whey protein maybe once or twice a day. I'm
beginning to think it's all just in my head!

Whoa, what's the problem with flax seed oil? I eat two tablespoons
per day in a salad and have been doing it for months. I have no PMS.
I've never heard that flax seed oil causes problems. I thought it was
good for me. Can you explain what you mean further? Thanks.

Other hormonal things you might be eating on a diet that might cause
hormonal mood problems include soy and evening primrose oil.

I do add soy milk to my coffee but only about 100mls of it a day. I

don't
eat tofu.

You might also want to try B vitamin supplements if you aren't taking

them.

I'll try taking them again and see what happens... Thanks!

Anyone have any bad experience with PMS or some hormonal imbalance as

What do you do to relieve yourself of it? Do you stress out and snap

Thanks for listening... hope to hear your experiences.

This is fascinating, Jenny. I'll assume that since I don't have any
hormonal problems, I can safely take it. Thanks for explaining it to
me.

I used to have major cravings for Doritos and potato chips
during PMS. It got easier when I put more fat free milk in
my eating program. I'm past that now.

That's exactly why I take it, but I also have PMS, and now I know why I
don't have it as bad as I used to...

Losing weight while at normal weight is naturally difficult.

I also have very modest weight loss plans for 2004 -- to lose 10-15
lb sof fat and gain 5 lbs of muscle -- and losing weight is a real
struggle. And I have no female hormonal issues.

Your BMI is 23, mine is 24.

Try valerian root, it has a great calming down effect and also has no
bad side effects. Sold in the supplement section of any drugstore. It
is basically an extract of valerian root. Has been used for centuries.

I've been taking Valerian root for some time now, and I swear by it.

Hmmm I have a jar of this at home... the weird smelling stuff. I'll see

if
it works. Thanks for the tip

I guess I'm okay with losing weight slowly... I'm giving myself about 4
months to lose 10lbs. My "normal weight" is around 122lbs so I'm not far
off. I just feel that PMS is getting the better of me with the way I

think
and perceive reality. I have not a lot of patience with people.... but

I'm
probably making it sound worse that it really is.

Any jpegs? I've been 49kg for the past three years, struggling to get down
to 45kg. (I'm 4ft11".) But I don't worry too much about the scale nowadays;
I've lost and gained inches in the right places.

I take valerian when I have trouble sleeping. When I first opened the
bottle, my husband and I agreed (I'm not sure which of us said it
first) that the stuff "smells like ass." So now my husband always
refers to the valerian as "the ass pills."

Works like a charm, though, without side effects or any woozy
morning-after grogginess.

I have not lost a kg this year at all and we're already 2 weeks in. :-(

Yeah they smell really funny. Do they slow down your metabolism? I'm

I have chocolates craving (even as I type!) My breasts feel like they're
going to explode and I have no motivation to do anything.. although I do
force myself to do things. My cycle is very irregular.. I think the last
time I had my period was 6 weeks ago. I get depressed every 2-4 months
during PMS.
