Those are possible explanations for a coincidental correlation, but I wouldn't consider them to be separate cases. |

Mood Disorders Center (MDOC), Department of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA. We have preliminarily investigated the hypothesis that sugar consumption may impact the prevalence of major depression by correlating per capita consumption of sugar with the prevalence of major depression. Major depression prevalence data (annual rate/100) was obtained from the Cross-National Epidemiology of Major Depression and Bipolar Disorder study [Weissman et al., 1996]. Sugar consumption data from 1991 was obtained from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. For the primary analysis, sugar consumption rates (cal/cap/day) were correlated with the annual rate of major depression, using the Pearson correlation coefficient. For the six countries with available data for the primary analysis, there was a highly significant correlation between sugar consumption and the annual rate of depression (Pearson correlation 0.948, P=0.004). Naturally, a correlation does not necessarily imply etiology. Caveats such as the limited number of countries with available data must be considered. Although speculative, there are some mechanistic reasons to consider that sugar consumption may directly impact the prevalence of major depression. Possible relationships between sugar consumption, beta-endorphins, and oxidative stress are discussed. Copyright 2002 Wiley-Liss, Inc. It is known that the body requires a number of vitamins to complete the metabolism of sugar. Notably the B vitamins and folate. When the bulk of carbs were relatively low in sugar and high in vitamins, depletion of these vitamins wasn't a problem. But now we have super-sweet corn that has been selectively bred to contain more sugars and starches. We have kids drinking half-gallon jugs of water mixed with large concentrations of high fructose corn syrup and no vitamins. We have huge mounds of french fries added to super-size a meal. Forcing the body to deal with these high levels of refined sugars and carbs not only displaces foods with more vitamins but it actually depletes the B vitamins. Today, B vitamin deficiencies are the norm and we are not very much aware of it. What does this have to do with depression? Tryptophan is a serotonin pre-cursor, as is Niacin. Tryptophan can be gotten from most foods, especially beef and other meats. Ther ois no shortage of tryptophan in the north american diet. But, in the absence of a number of vitamins including the B complex and folate, the body cannot convert the tryptophan and niacin into serotonin. Low levels of serotonin equals anxiety and depression. If you go to a doctor and tell him that you suffer from depression and/or anxiety he will *not* discuss your diet with you, he will simply and quickly prescribe you an anti-depressant. The pharmaceutical companies have made sure that he or she is ignorant of the diet-depression connection and he will, in his oblivion, give you a prescription that will take literally hundreds of dollars a month from your pocket straight into the coffers of the big pharma. However..NOW the light has gleamed for about 12 yrs now,,,I was Blind, Had failing Health, was "suicidal", "retired with no hope of getting better.. OR so I thought?? They specified RED meats which would include PORK, which is usually NOT aged. (Red is the healthy kind as there is no such thing as WHITE PORK where health is concerned as is the same for STALL-RAISED VEAL! ANYWAY, as long as she stays away from STORE BEEF, her bowels are fine. Twice when she went BACK to AGED Beef..they had to "clean her out" and gave her a rebuffing as well. ANYWAY...she also had discovered "KOMBU-CHA" and introduced it formally to me. It did its job so she gave me my first try that had results. I then studied ALL such solutions and ended up doing VAST research on ALL such products World-wide. I found many "variables' and had to wade through a morass of MIS-infomation. Finally enough "clicked" so that I finally "got an handle" on what was going on. I have since developed a SUPER " Divine Tsche" closer to te Chinese varieties but have added HERBALS as was suggested by a dude who had 5 offices World-wide and was the best HERBALIST EXPERT on the entire Planet, so I did MORE massive research and came up with a combination of HERBALS that I could use with Green and Oolong type teas and come up with an healing "digestive acid" producing WINNERS. I still attempt to iprove as I go...but have reached a PHOENIX in an ability to "REVERSE AGING" and help Ladies either reverse or clean up a messy menopause. ( sometimess even reverse same to a normal healthy indicator of HEALTHY WOMANHOOD!) Over a period of 11 yrs, I have reversed my OWN aging by nearly 30 yrs and am as healthy as I've ever been AFTER having suffered a bout with Blindness and heart problems. Those BOTH are past history.
