Low carb before Atkins???
Somewhere on the net (forgive me if anyone has posted this, there's
about a 6 hour delay until my messages show up) a lo carb website posted the contents of a lo-carb diet panthlet from the 1700s (Its a fascinating read... does anyone have the link ?) - - Dr. Atkins never claimed to invent lo carb dieting of course... in fact he wrote and said in interviews that he got it from the American Medical Association (please correct me if I'm a bit off on this)- - it is what they were reccomending at the time. I guess for years it was an age old adage that if you want to lose weight cut back on the bread and potatoes... Obvoiusly, Dr. Atkins developed and sytemized the diet... but he never claimed to be the creator of the lo-carb diet. Ed |

Low carb before Atkins???
"Eddie" wrote in message om... Somewhere on the net (forgive me if anyone has posted this, there's about a 6 hour delay until my messages show up) a lo carb website posted the contents of a lo-carb diet panthlet from the 1700s (Its a fascinating read... does anyone have the link ?) Don't know about the 1700s, but you should google for "William Harvey" and "William Banting". Banting - a society undertaker in the mid- to late-nineteenth century - consulted Dr. Harvey about his weight, took his advice and lost about 50lb in a year. Banting them wrote a pamphlet describing the regime, which is very similar to Atkins although not as proscriptive. It was known as the Banting or Harvey-Banting Diet. It became so popular that 'banting' came to mean 'dieting'. It's *still* used in that sense in Sweden; 'jag bantar' means 'I am dieting'. |
